Listening to others beliefs and questioning your own is a foundation of knowledge. Never be afraid to explore new ideas, you may reinforce your current understanding, or doubt, even refute, what you have heretofore held sacrosanct. Remain sceptical. #wisdom #knowledge #truth

Great article, but buried beneath the more sensational “they used it to make sourdough bread” angle are the truly important discoveries: the yeast unexpectedly appears capable of breaking down phenol, which could have applications in cleaning contaminated environments, and Ötzi’s gut contains unique bacteria that may help researchers better understand modern gastroenterological disorders, including IBS and even bowel cancer.

As obnoxious as it is, she is entitled to her opinion, and I will defend her right to express it, while reserving my own right to debate her vigorously. While many decry the “loss of freedom” in the USA, they ignore the fact that in over half the world’s countries, expressing such opinions could result in censure, imprisonment, or worse. I came to the USA voluntarily and legally, became a citizen as soon as I had earned that privilege, and swore to uphold the Constitution and renounce allegiance to my former country. So yes, I will uphold her right to be an ignorant buffoon.

Aunt Lucy’s was part of my childhood in Kingston, Ontario. Whenever we visited, we had a meal there. One of my earliest memories is the owner proudly showing off an early microwave oven in the kitchen in the late 1950s or early 1960s. As a child, my favourite meal was “chicken in a basket” featuring Colonel Sanders’ Kentucky Fried Chicken which, at that time, was not sold in dedicated KFC outlets but through family restaurants. Aunt Lucy’s later built a KFC stand on the property and owned the local franchise rights for years. Our last visit was in 2015, just before it closed, more than 45 years after my first visit. thewhig.com/2016/05/09/aun…

My husby and I went out to dinner last night, and the bill came out to $200. I left a $50 tip on the table, thinking that was pretty reasonable. But the waiter looked at it and flat-out refused to take it. He told us that if we weren’t willing to leave at least $85, we shouldn’t be eating out in the first place. I was honestly caught off guard. I felt embarrassed sitting there, like we’d done something wrong. We weren’t trying to be cheap or disrespectful — I genuinely thought $50 was a fair tip for that bill. Now I keep replaying the whole thing in my head, wondering if I misjudged it and questioning whether $50 really wasn’t enough.😱

Your entire career was based on spotting which way the parade was moving, then rushing to the front so it looked as though you were leading it. By constantly shifting among contradictory positions, you created a system where any successful outcome could later be claimed as your victory, while every failure came with ready-made plausible deniability.

I always use a two-syllable name for dogs since they tend to respond better to short names with a clear, easy cadence. If you want a car-brand dog name, here are a few possibilities: Packard, Plymouth, Hudson, Saturn, Hummer, Tucker, Edsel, Doozy, Bricklin, Austin, Morris, Triumph, Rover, Hillman, Singer, Sunbeam, Jensen, Panhard, Talbot, Wartburg, Trabant, and Yugo.

I am not going to defend Donald Trump, but you really don’t have your head screwed on right, or it’s stuck so far up the Democratic partisan ass that you can’t think clearly, if you believe that nonsense about Joe Biden. He was essentially a Hail Mary pass in 2020. Even then, there were obvious early signs of cognitive decline, but he was selected because he was viewed as a “safe” candidate to run against a president who, despite constant controversy and a chaotic administration, had overseen a fairly strong economy for three years before SARS-CoV-2 and the Covid pandemic changed everything. Incumbent presidents are usually difficult to defeat, but the political and economic shock of Covid made Trump uniquely vulnerable. Almost any reasonably acceptable Democratic candidate likely would have won in that environment. As for the Biden administration itself, it was one of the most incompetent administrations since Herbert Hoover. Much of the decision-making appeared to come from unelected handlers and bureaucratic insiders operating behind the scenes, but it still happened under Biden’s presidency and therefore under his responsibility. What went wrong over those four years? Massive additional spending layered on top of already enormous pandemic expenditures, which further accelerated inflation. Border policies that allowed millions of illegal immigrants into the country. Policies perceived as hostile to domestic oil and gas production. A disastrously executed withdrawal from Afghanistan. Weak and inconsistent responses to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Continued Iranian advancement toward nuclear capability while also supporting proxy terrorism throughout the Middle East. And yes, I already know the response will be, “But what about Trump?” As I said at the beginning, I am not defending Donald Trump. Both of his administrations had serious flaws and controversies. But you made this specifically about Joe Biden, and viewed objectively, he will go down as one of the worst presidents in modern American history.

Imagine the worst thing you can say about Joe Biden is that he got old while carrying the weight of the country on his shoulders. He beat Trump when no one else could. He gave America and the world a fighting chance. He rebuilt the economy, passed historic legislation, stood with our allies, and restored dignity after four years of chaos and incompetence. Yes, he believed he still had more to give. That is not a moral failing. That is a man who loved his country and did not want to walk away from the fight when his nation needed him. In the end, he didn't fail the country, we did, because we fully knew the stakes. History will be much kinder to 46 than the pundits ever were. That I know. I’ve got his back. How about you?

When my uncle would visit us in Canada from the UK, my mother would insist that he get some rest after the long trip and because of the jet lag. He preferred spending family time together over a meal, and his response was always, “You’ll get enough sleep when you’re dead, but you always have to eat when alive.” Well, you get pretty skinny when you’re dead, so…

From a thermodynamic and fluid-dynamic standpoint, reverse parking represents a significant optimization strategy. Statistical traffic-flow models demonstrate that vehicles exiting a parking space nose-first reduce average egress time by approximately 25–40%, while simultaneously decreasing collision probability due to improved forward-field visual acquisition. From a fluid mechanics perspective, parking lots behave as low-velocity chaotic flow systems. Backing into a parking space shifts the high-uncertainty maneuver to the arrival phase, when the driver still possesses momentum coherence and environmental awareness. Exiting forward later produces smoother traffic laminarity and reduces stochastic turbulence caused by abrupt reversing vectors. Quantum mechanically, the issue becomes even more compelling. During reverse exit, pedestrians, shopping carts, and compact SUVs exist in a probabilistic observational state analogous to Schrödinger’s crossover vehicle. The driver’s line-of-sight collapses the wave function only milliseconds before interaction. Reverse-entry parking minimizes this uncertainty by ensuring departure occurs with maximal observational fidelity and reduced entropy generation. In short: people back into parking spots because Newtonian mechanics, statistical safety analysis, fluid dynamics, and quantum observational theory all suggest it is the locally optimal parking solution.

@gjackson49 @1Nicdar I’m not a fan of cooked lettuce but many cuisines have recipes. French cooks braise it in butter and stock, Chinese cooks stir-fry it with garlic, and restaurants char romaine on grills all the time. Cooked lettuce sounds strange but cooks have been doing it for centuries.
