Anonymous I run a small bakery. Woman came in every Friday morning. Same order. Two blueberry muffins. One coffee. Always sat at the corner table. Read her book. Stayed an hour. Did this for three years. Then she stopped coming. After two months I got worried. Found her number in our loyalty program. Called. She answered. Voice weak. “Oh. Hi. I’ve been meaning to cancel that.” “Are you okay? You haven’t been in.” Long pause. “I have cancer. Stage four. I’m in hospice now. Those Friday mornings were my favorite part of the week. But I can’t make it anymore.” My heart broke. “What if I brought Friday to you?” Silence. Then crying. “You’d do that?” “Every Friday. Same time. Same order.” Showed up that Friday. She was in a hospital bed in her living room. So thin. But she smiled when she saw those muffins. We sat. She told me about her week. Her family. Her life. I listened. Just like at the bakery. Did this for six weeks. Every Friday. Last Friday she could barely stay awake. But she held that muffin. Took one bite. “Best thing I’ve tasted all week.” She passed on Monday. Her daughter called. “Mom’s last words were about you. She said ‘tell the baker thank you. Fridays kept me human until the end.’” Went to her funeral. Her daughter hugged me. “You gave her normal when everything else was hospitals and pain. You gave her Fridays.” Now I deliver to three hospice patients. Every Friday. Because sometimes a muffin isn’t just a muffin. It’s dignity. It’s routine. It’s proof that someone still sees you as you. Not as sick. Just as you.

When Marlowe’s British Kitchen opened in Leeds, Rabbi Gilbert asked the Muslim owners, Jenade Yamin and Arabaab “Paddy” Munir if they would consider making it kosher as well as halal. They did not have to. It meant change and cost. Paddy thought about it and said yes. Now there are halal and kosher fryers side by side and one long queue for fish and chips. Orthodox Jews, Muslim families, neighbours from every background, ordering the same national dish. Everyone remained unmistakably themselves, they simply widened the table and in that small act, you glimpse the country we can still choose to be. I am so utterly fed up of this constant lie that Britain is absolutely reliant on low-skilled immigration to keep our country dragging along. That is just not true. It's boring and it's wrong. Let’s take the NHS. We’re always told how its built on immigration. Total nonsense. Reason number one - if we trained our own people, there would be no need to import foreign professionals through such vast numbers. We deliberately block British boys and girls from training medicine, then ship in staff from the third world. And let’s be clear. Their training is often not good enough. Their language is often not good enough. Their attitude is often not good enough. That’s just a fact. The NHS needs translators, but not for the patients - it’s the sodding staff half the time. So we have some of the brightest young British men and women unable to train through our own decisions, and we replace them with migrants who are all too often not up to the job. Great work, everyone. What a result that is. Even British medics who have been trained can’t get work. Those roles are being filled by imported Nigerians. It all just sounds too ludicrous to be true. It is very much absolutely true. Then these pro-immigration hide behind the fact that they bumped into a foreign receptionist in a hospital. It is absolutely nothing personal against these specific individuals, I don’t blame them. I blame our rotten politicians. I’m sure that receptionist is a possibly a nice lady, but she shouldn’t be here. We have millions of healthy Brits on benefits doing nothing. The answer is quite simple - GET THEM WORKING. There is also the moral argument of taking these individuals away from their own countries, but I am uninterested in that. But let’s just park all that for one moment. Why is demand so high in our hospitals? Go and sit in a hospital waiting room in London, Birmingham, Manchester - pretty much anywhere in Britain other than leafy Surrey. It’s packed full of foreigners. They have every need catered to them. Don’t speak English? Great. We’ll fund the translator. Hundreds of millions are spent on this. It is, and I don’t apologise for my language here, a total piss-take. All whilst taxpaying British men and women are unable to see their GP, get a scan or receive timely treatment. I have no issue with bringing in the odd brain surgeon or oncologist. Great, let’s do that until we can train our own. But to suggest that Britain’s health service is so indebted to immigration is total bullshit and we should call it out for the reasons stated above.
