𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝟰× 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿: 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 Behind every finished piece of tempered glass is precision engineering, controlled heat, and expert fabrication. In this video, glass moves through the tempering oven—heated to extreme temperatures until it becomes red hot—transforming from an annealed substrate into high-performance safety glazing. From drilling and notching to edgework and finishing, GGI delivers fully customized glass solutions fabricated to specification and built for performance. During the tempering process, annealed glass is heated to approximately 1,100–1,200°F (593–649°C) and rapidly cooled. This thermal treatment increases strength and fundamentally changes how the glass performs under impact. What makes tempered glass different? • Tempered glass is up to 4× stronger than annealed glass • It breaks into small fragments unlike large shards resulting from annealed glass breakage • Designed to reduce injury risk in human-impact areas • Meets CPSC 16 CFR 1201 and ANSI Z97.1 requirements • Tested and certified by the Safety Glazing Certification Council (SGCC) Under ASTM C1048, fully tempered glass must meet strict compression requirements, resulting in reliable performance under wind loads and thermal stress. Where is safety glazing required? Building codes mandate tempered glass in hazardous locations such as: • Doors and all-glass entrances • Sidelites and storefront systems • Curtain walls and windows near walking surfaces • Glass railings and guardrails • Interior partitions and office fronts • Shower enclosures From 3/16" (5 mm) to 3/4" (19 mm) thick glass, GGI supports customers with complex fabrication—including holes, notches, edge profiles, and tempering to meet safety glazing code requirements for hazardous locations. #GGI #SeeWhatGlassCanDo

In reality, it frequently functions as a performance-driven component of the built environment. When addressed during schematic design, decorative glass systems can support both design intent and building performance. Architects who evaluate decorative glass early gain greater flexibility in coordinating: • daylighting strategies • privacy requirements • safety glazing compliance • panel sizing and structural integration From satin etched and textured patterned glass to digitally printed and laminated decorative glass, today’s architectural glass solutions allow design teams to combine aesthetics with performance. General Glass International shares insights on why decorative architectural glass should be addressed earlier in the design process. What is thin ribbed textured glass used for in architectural design? GGI offers versatile options for architects and designers seeking clean, modern texture, along with reliable sourcing for glass fabricators. Thin Ribbed and Thin Ribbed Low-Iron textured pattern glass provide subtle linear texture that supports daylighting while adding privacy and visual interest. The narrow ribbed pattern works well in interior partitions, doors, decorative panels, and other architectural glazing applications where texture and light diffusion are desired. Ideal for hospitality, healthcare, and Class A office spaces looking to create privacy without sacrificing the sharing of light between spaces. Glass can be supplied fabricated to specification, in full cases, or as part of a mixed truckload of cased goods, giving glazing contractors and fabricators flexible sourcing options. From flat glass and decorative textures to specialty architectural glass, GGI helps simplify procurement with dependable inventory and nationwide distribution. #GGI #SeeWhatGlassCanDo #DecorativeGlass #PatternGlass #TexturedGlass

GGI was proud to support the 18th Annual Harlem Fine Arts Show (HFAS18) recently held at The Glasshouse in New York City. GGI extends sincere thanks to the Harlem Fine Arts Show organization for the invitation and opportunity to participate in this inspiring event celebrating artists of the African diaspora. Stephen Balik, Principal at General Glass International, spoke, sharing insights on how architectural decorative glass can bring artistic vision to life in the built environment. Through solutions such as Alice® Direct-to-Glass Printing, GGI collaborates with artists, architects, and project teams to translate creative concepts into durable architectural installations. This year’s event featured more than 100 artists of the African diaspora and highlighted the collaborative “I Was Here” project with Atlanta-based artist Paul Preston—exploring ancestry and storytelling through multimedia expression. Many may not be aware, but GGI’s debut project using Alice® Direct-to-Glass Printing was the Harlem Hospital Center, featuring a 13,000-square-foot glass façade that pays homage to the historic “Pursuit of Happiness” murals. GGI continues to support the intersection of art, architecture, and glass, with numerous public art installations available for viewing online.

Why should decorative glass be addressed earlier in the architectural design process? Decorative glass should be evaluated during schematic design and design development because it functions as an integrated building component—not simply a finish material added at the end of a project. When decorative glazing is addressed early, architects and project teams gain greater control over: • Pattern scale and visual consistency • Opacity control and privacy requirements • Safety glazing compliance and code alignment • Structural coordination and attachment details • Fabrication timelines and installation sequencing Early coordination allows decorative glass to support both design intent and performance goals across multiple applications, including: • Glass entrance systems that combine transparency with branding or privacy • Glass railings that integrate decorative patterns while maintaining safety compliance • Wall cladding that delivers color, texture, or custom graphics • Interior glass partitions that balance daylight and visual separation • Glass canopies that provide weather protection while reinforcing architectural identity Treating decorative glass as a functional building material—rather than a late-stage aesthetic decision—helps protect design intent, reduce redesigns, and streamline construction documentation. To support early specification and coordination, GGI provides CSI three-part specifications available on SpecLink and on the GGI website. Architectural samples, mock-ups, and design-assist services help architects, designers, and glazing contractors evaluate materials, confirm performance, and refine details before fabrication begins. Engaging with GGI in the early phases of design helps ensure decorative glass supports creative vision, code compliance, and long-term performance throughout the life of the project. An excellent example of decorative glass serving both functional and aesthetic purposes is the Z Bar rooftop lounge at the Peninsula Chicago Hotel overlooking Michigan Avenue. The glass canopy meets safety glazing requirements while providing a striking visual element, along with shading and solar control. #GGI #SeeWhatGlassCanDo

How can Alice® custom grid glass designs add value for glazing contractors and end users? This video shows custom fabricated glass with an Alice® direct-to-glass printed grid design entering the tempering oven, where ceramic frit ink is fused into the glass surface to create a durable, permanent pattern. GGI applies decorative grid designs directly to glass to emulate the appearance of traditional iron grids used in custom shower enclosures, doors, and window applications. Grid color, size, spacing, and pattern can be customized to support a wide range of architectural styles and project requirements. Because the grid is fused into the glass, there is no metal framing to maintain, no applied components to clean around, and no risk of corrosion over time. The result is a cleaner aesthetic and simplified long-term maintenance. Customers may also upgrade the glass with Enhance® glass surface protection on one or both surfaces to further improve cleanability and help maintain the glass appearance for years. For glazing contractors, decorative grid designs create new opportunities to add value through customization, reduce installation complexity, and deliver premium design-forward solutions. These options help differentiate offerings, support higher-margin upgrades, and increase overall project revenue—without increasing long-term maintenance for the end user. #GGI #DecorativeGlass
