Russia is entering the critical stage of the war it feared the most. According to Reuters, the Ukrainian army is gradually but steadily seizing the initiative on the battlefield. Russian forces, exhausted by constant assaults and massive losses, are no longer capable of carrying out large-scale offensive operations. In many cases, they are abandoning equipment and positions, which are then taken over by Ukrainian troops without losses on Ukraine’s side. Ukraine now has a strategic window of roughly six months to strengthen its positions as much as possible, accumulate resources, and prepare for possible negotiations from a position of strength. If the current pace of the Armed Forces of Ukraine continues, Russia risks losing even the theoretical chance of fully capturing the Donetsk region. And within a few more months, it could begin facing critical depletion of both manpower and military equipment.
