@andydaviesref @_ToddBeane Andy, Todd is completely correct here. Football and all sports demand the attempt at consistency in referee actions. Otherwise, advantage is given to one team. Kovac enforced the red card rule. Why did he not give Koke two yellow cards? This inconsistency gave advantage to AM.

Todd appreciate your message, reading your profile you are obviously an intelligent guy. Football is not consistent and cannot be refereed so. No situations are the same on a football pitch, some subjective, some factual and some game management decisions. Football doesn’t want consistency, it does when it’s suits, however the very inconsistency is the subjective sport itself.

On Barca penalty appeal: Technically, it is a penalty. Law 16 The Goal Kick says the ball is in play when it is kicked and clearly moves. However, UEFA have been ambiguous with similar situations in recent seasons, allowing the referees the autonomy to use their game management skills, judge the moment and trust their instincts. A characteristic that referee István Kovács showed on the night. There are, at times situations where you need to balance between technical law and spirit of the law. Barca were not impacted by the action, if they were I'm positive the outcome would have been different.

@johnspacemuller This is what happens when UEFA remove the away goals rule, which made the Champions League knockouts the most exciting sport event in history. Expect more away team extreme low blocks now that there is no reward for away goals. Peak performance no longer needed to advance.
