We remember Trooper Samuel Mangiamele. Trooper Samuel Mangiamele succumbed to injuries received five days earlier when his police motorcycle went out of control on loose gravel at 11th Street and Field Boulevard in Chicago, Illinois. He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he remained until his death. Trooper Mangiamele had served with the Illinois State Police for three years and was assigned to District 3. Trooper Mangiamele was survived by his wife. End of Watch, May 25, 1945 #NeverForget

No parent or guardian wants a knock on their door from one of our officers telling them their child has been injured or killed in a crash. Graduation and Prom are supposed to be happy moments in their lives. ISP is doing our part to help prevent tragedies through patrols and education, but teens need to do their part and make smart, safe decisions.

We remember Trooper Benard Skeeters. Trooper Bernard Skeeters was killed when his patrol car was struck from behind by a truck tractor semi on Interstate 55. Working a safety detail at about 9:00 a.m., Trooper Skeeters was patrolling southbound on Interstate 55 behind an Illinois Department of Transportation paint truck. A truck tractor semi driver fell asleep behind the wheel and slammed into Trooper Skeeters' squad car. Trooper Skeeters' squad car was forced into the IDOT paint truck which was carrying flammable paints and thinners. Both the squad car and paint truck exploded and were engulfed in flames. The three-vehicle accident instantly killed Trooper Skeeters. The drivers of both the IDOT truck and the truck tractor semi survived the accident. The semi-trailer driver was charged with reckless homicide. However, a jury could not reach a unanimous decision to convict him. Trooper Bernard Skeeters was a U.S Army veteran of the Vietnam war and was a 12-year veteran of the Illinois State Police; He was assigned to District 9 in Springfield. The Illinois State Police Division of Justice Services (DJS) plays a vital role in administratively and technologically supporting the ISP and criminal justice agencies across the state. DJS oversees critical statewide programs such as LEADS, criminal history records, firearms eligibility, and offender registration. The division ensures regulatory compliance by inspecting firearm dealers and cannabis business facilities. This week, five officers traveled to Washington, D.C. to represent ISP during National Police Week and honor the brave men and women in law enforcement who made the ultimate sacrifice. While in D.C., members of ISP participated in the Police Unity Tour Ride-In and the 38th Annual Candlelight Vigil, standing alongside officers from across the nation to pay tribute to fallen officers and support their families. The Division of Forensic Services (DFS) strives to improve the effectiveness of the criminal justice community and enhance public safety by delivering accurate, complete, and timely crime scene evidence collection, traffic crash reconstruction, efficient evidence storage, and forensic laboratory analysis. The Division’s mission is to deliver accurate and timely forensic services to assist with the identification and prosecution of the guilty and the exoneration of the innocent in the State of Illinois. The Illinois State Police would like to recognize the commitment of the officers of the Division of Forensic Services as we celebrate those in law enforcement during National Police Week.

We remember Trooper Robert Thomas. Trooper Robert Thomas succumbed to injuries received two days earlier when he was involved in a motorcycle accident while responding to a drowning call in Edwardsville. The motorcycle began to have mechanical troubles that caused him to lose control of the bike. He was thrown into a culvert and sustained severe injuries. He regained consciousness for a short time and explained what happened before passing away. Trooper Thomas had served with the Illinois State Police for one year and was assigned to District 11. Trooper Thomas was killed one day before he was to enlist in the U.S. Army. He was survived by his fiancée”. End of Watch, May 15, 1942 #NeverForget

ISP Division of Internal Investigation (DII) is committed to protecting public safety and ensuring the integrity of state government. DII conducts investigations into allegations of criminal actions committee by state employees related to their job, and houses the Identified Offender Program designed to protect the safety of those living in licensed nursing care facilities. ISP celebrates National Police Week and honors the dedicated men and women within DII.
