This is a great story yet also unfortunate - stole from LI
Today we celebrate USA Men’s Hockey bringing home GOLD. 🥇🇺🇸
As the highlight reels roll and the motivational clips start circulating, many of them using scenes from Miracle, I can’t help but think about one man in particular.
Michael Mantenuto played Jack O’Callahan in Miracle, the story of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team.
But that role was only one chapter of his life.
After Hollywood, Mike answered a different calling. He earned his Green Beret and served in the U.S. Army Special Forces. He later built a wildly successful youth hockey program at Fort Bragg, pouring into the next generation the same grit and love for the game that defined him.
He also became an early voice exploring alternative healing modalities for veterans, long before the broader veteran-care world began embracing innovative approaches to TBI, PTS, and recovery.
Mike and I went through Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) together.
Two Mikes. Same initials. Grew up about 45 minutes from each other. That was enough to spark a friendship while we were “embracing the suck” together. We crossed paths again and again throughout the Special Forces Qualification Course until we both graduated.
On April 24, 2017, Mike lost his battle with his demons.
We miss you, brother.
This gold medal would have meant the world to you. I know you’d be fired up watching these young men represent the flag with pride. I’d like to believe you’re watching from somewhere on the other side.
RIP, Mike.
