@shagbark_hick My work takes me into a lot of homes, often those on the poor end of the spectrum. Sometimes, the conditions are shockingly bad. In those cases, often mental health issues creating other challenges, employment, etc. Some folks have a hard time pulling life together in every way.

One thing I've never understood about some poor people (to include some of my own family) is this: Why can't they keep things clean? It costs no money to pick up. Doesn't take long either. But in so many of these houses, it's dirty diapers on the floor, wrappers under the bed, dog piss on the carpet, and the refrigerator looks like something out of a morgue in a war zone. Every horizontal surface is covered in unorganized stuff, garbage, papers, etc. It's a nightmare. Even worse, there's always an excuse -- and if, when visiting you, they find you have a clean house, they're jealous. The unspoken vibe is "you must think you're so much better than me!" when in reality, you're just keeping a normal, clean, nice house. Being poor is one thing, but giving up on life is another. Just seems like garden variety mental illness to me. And if you call it what it is, a chorus of people will call you judgemental and mean.
