@JamesSurowiecki Claiming there "is no good civic argument" sounds about as dishonest as one would expect from anyone who writes for The Atlantic. It takes 5 minutes to identify plenty of well-researched, deeply considered arguments, even if your pals in the West Village don't know them.

@JamesSurowiecki There's a very good civic argument. Elections are run by states. A national popular vote incentivizes the more lopsided states to run their elections in a way that runs up the score. Compare with gerrymandering.

There's no good civic argument for the electoral college. It was arguably necessary to ensure the ratification of the Constitution, but it's an anti-democratic device that gives some American citizens far more voting power than others, based purely on where they live.

Going back on those promises now is anti American and anti representation. Smaller states joined the Union based on guarantees that they would have a meaningful say in how the larger Union would be governed. If we eliminate the relevancy of their votes by retroactively turning the Republic into a direct democracy, why should those states continue to play along? Why shouldn’t they leave the Union altogether? You are advocating for dissolving the Union.
