What a privilege to live a challenging life.

When I talk of being “let to be,” it may seem arrogant and appear as though my need for solitude is an expression of superiority. But when people breach my peace for too long I start to resent them and treat them as if they irritate me. Isn’t this worse than me being by myself?

My simple duty to decent and responsible men of our society is to check in on their needs. Their actual needs, not performative sympathy or empathy. When an unfortunate event occurs, we overestimate how safe a man is and underestimate how safe women are. Because we see harm done to men as something that remains likely, and must perhaps happen, whereas we view harm done to women as an abomination, even in situations where the latter is a consequence of the woman’s actions or inaction. I had a conversation with a friend of mine on the sacrifices men make for family. There I maintained that if a family goes into hardship, a man could sell his body parts to save them from perishing. But onlookers would show pity to the crying mother and children—asking him about “wifey and the kids,” even when he’s done who clearly looks sick. This also occurs to men who take care of the family their father abandoned. It’s worse because they didn’t create this family. People ask, “How’s mumsy?” “How are your younger ones?” But the person whose world is crushing is the young man who had to become a father and husband from his teens, without the control or respect; who abandons his personal interests and ambitions to take people who might as well be alright if he meets an early death. His mother’s words and prayers are exalted to the point where it’s viewed as a special blessing which he must strive to constantly—as the reason why his life isn’t worse. This is unfair. The sad reality is, if his responsibilities crush him to the point where he amounts to little, those he cared for might abandon him. If they help him, they’d convince themselves that he owes them his life and become entitled to his service even if he goes ahead to form his own (new) family. In a society that claims to aspire for equality and fairness, this must be revisited!

I am not even being tribalistic here, but this is a taboo in Yoruba land, and it cannot happen in it. That doesn't mean a "small" subset cannot perpetuate it, but a collective madness like this signifies a grave underlying moral issue. The law should swing to action
