@PrideslayerMMA Unfortunate, one of the things I disliked the most about rs3 was the general avatar design. Insanely long, lanky arms looks bad, they somehow just made them long and lankier

@BisonIsMeaty Especially considered the problem has already been solved several years ago by spell reordering. The number of people who either didn’t read the blog or just don’t even TRY things before complaining never ceases to amaze me

@austinm21069159 If you think this is still just a “point and click adventure game from 2001,” then idk what to say to you lol

@Local_OSRS If we continue to let this happen we wont be that greener grass. Still a point and click game from 2001 shouldn't be that expensive. Just another example of corporate greed.

You guys can complain all you want about this, but have any of you even taken a look at the rest of the gaming industry right now? Us RuneScape players ARE the greener grass on the other side. The fact that we have a game that receives such great content updates so frequently with this level of monetization is really incredible.

@zepperzz Exactly my point. The fact that old school has such healthy monetization (relatively speaking) and the team is GROWING is a miracle in this industry.

@Local_OSRS I’ve been working in the gaming industry now for just under 8 years and it’s in the worst state it’s been in a long time, especially with so many company layoffs over the past year

To all the Oldschool Runescape players out there upset over the $15 a month subscription: Would you prefer $9 a month WITH a cosmetic, override-driven cash shop akin to that of World of Warcraft? Vote here:

@JohnAnthon7zm1 Right, and if you asked ANY serious player if you thought 4.5 cents was worth the amount of fun you had, I think we all know the honest answer 😂

I didnt know that, that’s good to know. But 15% of 125 million is almost 19 million dollars, which isn’t exactly a small number. I’m sure if you sat in the board meeting with the PE firm being like hey we’re gonna remove this feature that gives us 19 million a year, they’re not just gonna let you do that, they’re gonna ask how you plan on making that up. Sure, old school players shouldn’t have to pay that difference, but the memberships are one and the same. They’d have to separate the old school and rs3 memberships if they wanted to just increase the price for rs3 players.

@Local_OSRS @DroppedSig I’m not 100% they can but rs3 micro transactions were making only 15% of the total money in 2024 jagex makes over 100-150mil a year.

@FPizza123 @DroppedSig That I agree with, but that just comes back to the fact that they’re both ran by the same company, and if RS3 fails entirely, we just let it die off and get canceled, can Jagex make enough money to be profitable off of old school alone?

@Local_OSRS @DroppedSig Yeah I don’t think you’re wrong with the rs3 thing but if rs3 proves to not be profitable I don’t think osrs players should fork up cash to make sure it does.

We can adjust for inflation, sure, but we also have to keep in mind a growing investment from Jagex themselves, right? The OSRS team literally quintupled in size over the past 8 years, no? The game is far more expensive to run today than it ever has been. That isn't to say the membership price can or should increase indefinitely, but it's a relatively small price to pay for a game that is unpolluted by the kinds of monetization practices every other popular MMO on earth has.

@FPizza123 @DroppedSig I guess we really don’t know how OSRS or the team is doing (financially) with the money it’s making, but I always assumed that os wasn’t making enough just in memberships, and that they needed a lot of the rs3 money to continue development. I could be wrong though.

@Local_OSRS @DroppedSig I think osrs is doing just fine with the money it’s making, rs3 on the other hand does not especially with the removal of micro transactions. Rs3 burdens should not affect osrs.

@FPizza123 @DroppedSig So how would you recommend OSRS makes its money to stay alive? Because historically a lot of that money comes from rs3’s cash shop profits.

No yeah definitely not. But as far as monetization goes, this is not even in the same realm as how bad and predatory 90% of other games are, so if the suits are gonna have to get a penny somehow, I’d rather it be here than in the form of goofy skins or seasonal content passes. Imagine you loaded up the game and they went “sorry you can’t do this quest or this raid until you buy the fractured archives expansion pack.” Chills. Hahah

Yeah that’s definitely true, I don’t give a rats ass about rs3. but I can see the direction they’re going. Obviously rs3 is kind of dying, and they’re taking steps to fix it. The other side of that coin is that historically, rs3’s volatile monetization is what allowed old school to exist in the first place. Taking that to its logical conclusion, they may have internal numbers that say that if they kept rs3 going the way it was, it would no longer be enough to support old school the way it has been, so they’re trying to fix the integrity of THAT game, in order to not run into that problem. Unfortunately, fixing the integrity means sacrificing that predatory monetization, and they have to make up for that somewhere. Is there still room for improvement to the current membership offerings? Sure. But we’ve gotta look at the long term here, and I think this is probably a play to try to secure the integrity long term, to avoid having to do what the rest of the industry is doing.

@Local_OSRS @DroppedSig I agree but a 60% price increase for yearly membership in the last 4 years they need to give way more benefits for members than just increasing it with no reason to buy it. I know every osrs member doesn’t care about rs3 not having micro transactions lmao

I would like to see an additional character or two, yes. (one membership giving you access to a main, iron and GIM for example) But my overarching argument is that at the end of the day if I have to choose between the game continuing as-is with a slight price increase, versus doing what ALL other modern MMO’s do with awful cash shops, “expansion packs” to access new content, and MTX out the ass,,, I would WAY rather take the former, and I think most players would too.
