Magic, but like Chemistry

(Hello friends, I was hoping to have a new story up for February but a number of unfortunate personal things have happened recently, and I've been unable to focus on anything particularly creative as a result. Hopefully I'll be back in March! Thanks for sticking around!)

The scholar thought for a moment. Tapped his fork. "The wizard's looking for a way to break his own curse...if you want to trust him." The assessor smirked. Perfect. "Jury's out on him, but I trust you." He offered his hand. The scholar took it. "Welcome to the tower." 61/61

The assessor confessed his curse, weaving a tale of dungeons and daring and traps. It was the first time he'd admitted the truth. Everyone loved a hero, after all. Not failures who never made a name for themselves. The scholar was a patient listener. Avid, even. Engaged. 60/61

Nobody knew what happened to the crazy old wizard in the clifftop tower. He'd been up there for longer than the village had been settled. Lightning and sea-churning storms used to wrack the coast, some wild experiment or display of might. Until one day, they just stopped. 1/61
