Lychgates are one of the most distinctive features of old English churches. Yet most people walk through them without ever knowing what they were built for. The word comes from the Old English lich, meaning “corpse”. They began appearing in England during the medieval period, particularly from the 13th century onwards. For hundreds of years, funeral processions would pause beneath the gate before entering the churchyard. Here, the priest would meet the funeral procession and begin the first part of the service beneath the shelter of the gate. Many were built from heavy oak, with tiled or timber roofs designed to protect mourners from the weather. The tradition slowly declined during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as funeral practices changed and hearses became more common. They are simple structures, but deeply symbolic, a threshold between village life and sacred ground. Next time you pass through an old church gate, look up. I do sometimes judge and call out outright degeneracy when I see it, especially if someone is wearing a cross and being gross because that’s just plain hypocritical. Since I kinda gained most of my followers overnight due to an awful photo of me at a restore Britain branch meeting being posted, I never really introduced myself to my followers. As you’ve probably seen, I make chokers as a hobby, but I thought I’d also include that I love playing around with makeup too. I know it’s not to most people’s taste, and most people won’t give a fuck or will leave hate comments, but it’s fun and a form of artwork I guess. Also it’s my account, I can post what ever I want (It will stay mostly political, but with the occasional personal post).
