Happy birthday, @NatGeoMag! The Society was founded January 13, 1888 but the first magazine issue was published Sept. 22 of that same year. And while there were photos inside the magazine as early as 1889, the first cover illustration wasn't until 1942. @InsideNatGeo

Marie Tharp was an American geologist and oceanographic cartographer who with Bruce Heezen mapped the Atlantic Ocean floor. She was also a key figure in the development of plate tectonics. Tharp and Heezen were awarded the @NatGeo Hubbard Medal in 1978. #WomensEqualityDay
