"Real yield" is one of the most important concepts in DeFi that most people get wrong 🧵 Old DeFi model (2020-2021): Protocols attracted liquidity by printing their own tokens and offering 500-2000% APY. This sounds amazing until you realize: where does the yield come from? New token emissions. Which dilutes every holder. You're earning tokens that are simultaneously losing value because everyone is dumping their rewards. It worked in a bull market. In a bear market, the token collapses and so does the "yield." Real yield model: Yield that comes from ACTUAL protocol revenue — fees from trading, lending, liquidations — distributed to token holders or LPs. Examples: 🔹 GMX: distributes 30% of trading fees to stakers in ETH/USDC (not GMX tokens) 🔹 Gains Network: distributes DAI yield to stakers 🔹 Synthetix: fee revenue from synth trading to SNX stakers How to evaluate: → Where does the yield come from? (Revenue or emissions?) → Is the protocol generating real fees? → Is yield paid in stablecoins/ETH or native tokens? Real yield projects can sustain themselves without constant token inflation. In a bear market, real yield protocols lost value far less than emission-based ones. 📊 In DeFi: follow the revenue, not the APY.
