While I was growing up, health care providers in our community would come and go, and my parents still don’t have access to regular care. It is my hope to foster passion for rural care in my classmates and eventually commit my career to a rural community.

“The drug overdose death rate in rural areas is higher than in urban areas,” said CDC Director Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D. “We need to understand why this is happening so that our work with states and communities can help stop illicit drug use and overdose deaths in America.”

Rural areas of America in particular are hit hard due to the poverty, limited education, and lack of support networks, which are major risk factors for drug use disorders.

International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on the 31st of August each year. Its purpose is to raise awareness of overdoses, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends.
