@joboaler Two knee-jerk hypotheses: Districts are struggling more and more to provide funding for high quality PD Teachers are burnt out in higher numbers and not wanting to spend more time in work-related activity

So many educators I am meeting are saying the same thing - teachers are not coming to PD offerings in the numbers they used to. Is anyone else finding this? And does anyone understand why? I would love to know more …. edsurge.com/news/2023-12-1…

She also noted that students had a more positive attitude towards math class when they were able to use calculators. Thoughts?

A meta-analysis by Aimee Ellington in 2003 found that calculators "did not hinder the development of mathematical skills" but actually improved problem solving when calculators were used in class and during tests.

Good evening #MTBOS, #iteachmath, etc, I'm a high school math teacher and have found myself more and more in the camp of "using calculators is eroding number sense." (1/3)

I've struggled to find sound, quantitative analysis supporting or debunking this hypothesis of mine. Would any of y'all happen to know of research showing an increase or decrease in number sense, mathematical fluency, etc. while using calculators vs. not? Preferably HS. (3/3)

This afternoon I've wondered if that is actually the case, or if this is just some baseless opinion adopted by me and many other math teachers. (2/3)

@robertkaplinsky One of the best activities of the year seeing students create quadratic functions before even teaching it!

Teaching functions? Have students watch this crazy video. Then ask them how many hot dogs the competitive eaters would have eaten if they hadn't run out. robertkaplinsky.com/work/hot-dogs/

@MrCorleyMath @Meta Agreed! I’m not a fan of thinking Zuck is the winner in all this. Maybe Twitter gets sold again and it’s fixed, or maybe Mastodon is the answer. *shrug*

@RileyMathClass @Meta IMO most things Meta are advertising platforms masquerading at social media platforms. Twitter has sort of gone that direction lately too.

2 Twitter accounts and it’s interesting how much more discussion there is in personal network compared to professional about @Meta Threads. I have noticed that there’s no hashtag so it may be hard to find conversations like #mtbos or #thinkingclassroom. Maybe I’m missing it.

@druinok I feel like there are some content leaders that need to make a decision so we aren’t all on 10 different platforms.

@RileyMathClass Come over to Mathstodon and join the convo there! It's kind of back to how the community started on Twitter, so it will take time to build back up followers, but the convos have started!
