Today we are going to take a moment to respond to once again ”funnel talk”. Unfortunately several persons had simply declared SS United States unrepairable due to the removal of the funnels and radar mast. Thankfully history tells us this is completely nonsensical. The Queen Mary had her original funnels replaced when she was in the process of being restored in Long Beach. USS Midway has had tons of steel that was not salvageable removed during her preservation process, USS Constitution which was designated by Congress as a museum ship in the early 1900s and never had this designation removed is less than 20% original. And finally many ocean liners and other vessels had to have their entire bows replaced due to collisions with objects or other vessels such as the Stockholm after colliding with the Andrea Doria. And the USS Wisconsin also had her bow replaced.

The NY Coalition proposal has passed the New York City Council officially asking the United States Government to consider saving the SS United States from reefing. The City of New York which is also the SS United States home port now joins the State of Oregon in declaration of SAVING not reefing the SS United States. Our march forward continues with the Coalition and the Foundation in our mutual goal of preservation of the SS United States above the waves. This is just the beginning. In 1944 the SS Great Republic departed the United States carrying over 1,000 tons of turkey. This ship was a special refrigerated ship whose sole mission and only cargo was to deliver fresh turkey for Thanksgiving to allied soldiers in Europe. SS Great Republic succeeded in her mission and over 1 million soldiers were able to enjoy fresh poultry straight from the United States heartland to the front lines with the ongoing relentless onslaught against the German army. A welcome respite from the carnage of war. Today we are giving thanks to our families, friends and coworkers who are a pleasure to be around every day. We thank the SS United States Preservation Foundation Inc. and the New York Coalition to save the SS United States for taking up this movement to save history from disposal. But most of all we would like to thank our followers and supporters. The Federal government cannot randomly seize private property. It is against federal law and we are not advocating the Congress or any other government entity to illegally take the SS United States. It is not possible. What we are advocating for is for the Government to make an offer the Okaloosa County that both parties would benefit from should both parties come to an agreement. Any personal indication, rumor, speculation or opinion that we or our partners are advocating for illegal seizure of the SS United States is laughably obvious and clearly not the case to the point of absurdity, nonsensical and persons who have come to this conclusion are unfortunately ill-informed about our partner's plan and how government works.

@WaterDuck8_5741 @SSUSAlliance They officially have no place. The plan is to have the federal government, seize the ship and force a port to take it. Then they want the federal government to pay for dry dock, port remediation, ship restoration. Is that really a plan? No.

This article (link below) about the disposal of the SS united States fails to mention several items concerning the Foundation and Alliance. There is no mention of removal of the multiple layers of lead based paint still present on the hull of the vessel. There is no mention of removal of hexavalent and zinc chromium a known carcinogen and its effects on marine life, coral development and human health and safety. Based on recent pictures released online none of this has been removed. Hexavalent chromium is the same material from the PG&E Hinkley groundwater contamination scandal that despite a $700+ million clean up effort since the 1990s continues to be present in the water table of the area. Current estimates are a 6x4 mile size contamination area based on a 2015 study. Okaloosa county does not have a hyperbaric chamber unit installed in any of its healthcare facilities. The closest known unit is located in Alabama. Claiming to be the "premier diving destination" while lacking proper healthcare facilities is improper prior to the disposal of the SS United States. This disposal not deployment also does not make any mention of the mitigation effort of the colonization of invasive species and how they will affect native fisheries. The SS United States in our opinion needs more work prior to any thoughts of disposal in the Gulf of Mexico and the effects in will have on the surrounding communities and the very divers who wish to recreate. That is why the Alliance continues to support the alternative to disposal as an above water attraction for veteran rehabilitation, a learning center and tourist attraction where people from all over the world can enjoy. A statement from the SS United States Preservation Foundation Inc. However with American and online culture wars as a rule can sometimes get unpleasant. That being said in regards to this situation we have observed dialog that was concerning and at times disturbingly personal. The names of the individuals who posted or commented are irrelevant as the result was the same in terms of the level of negative impact it had on the debate on either side. While the Alliance understands tensions can flare and keyboards are broken in the course of discussion this is an example of the type of online discourse that is unhealthy for anyone involved. We would like to thank President of the SS United States Conservancy Susan Gibbs for her role in bringing civil discussion about the fate of the SS United States back into focus for all parties involved. To be clear, the SS United States Alliance holds no negative feelings towards the SS United States Conservancy as an organization or Okaloosa County. Decisions were made and we simply do not agree with the course of action when there are alternatives that can yield more positive results. Todays politically charged climate can lead to tempers flaring and words that can negatively impact debate while providing no benefit to either party.
