@arsumaguna Part of it is because it's way cheaper to reuse the same body type in 3d. Of course, ZZZ set out to have a relatively diverse cast and now as of 3.0 every character is the same bland girl sharing the same four design traits so it just comes down to lowest common denominator.

granblue's new earth realm npc roster has me really wishing that other gachas followed these paths and made really unorthodox and unique looking humanoids for their worldbuilding (COUGH COUGH star rail COUGH COUGH) each of these guys are incredibly diverse in origin, love them

@joniniplo I think the levels are alright when you're in the city but as soon as you get out, it starts to really pander to the idea that anything that isn't a flat arena is getting in the way of the gameplay, which makes a lot of action games duller and removes a whole dimension of design.

I think the reason I find 1 and 3’s level design better than dmc5’s is purely because the “exploration” element allows for a lot more interesting arenas imo

@InKDexpereince Tekken 3's guest character, Gon, was from a manga of the same name. If anything Yujiro is the return to tradition.

Its weird how with this generation of fighting game. Guest Characters have less become the rarity. But rather the Norm. And with every new characters the barrier of what they should use get lower and lower. "Another fighting game" -> "another game period' -> "TV Show" -> "Anime"

@SokZaJelo I get the impression a lot of arcade diehards have a bit of an inferiority complex where their response to being relatively niche in current year is to massively overblow how cool you are for being good at Final Fight and how if game design isn't arcade design it's for babies.

@LittleRedFool The most frustrating part of most artbooks is the feeling that they're holding out on you and only showing you a tiny fraction. Even worse are companies that will do multiple artbooks for the same series/game and drip feed slightly more early iterations each time (arcsys).

Whilst I love artbooks for videogames I also feel that more of them need to include some of the initial ideas and iterations rather than just the finished concept art that would be used for 3D modelling. Let me see the process, please.

@CypressDahlia In anime in particular it feels overwhelmingly common for a show to blow their load at the start and then lose momentum and just sputter out. Frontloading is a real problem, I really appreciate shows that start weak but end strong. There's a quiet confidence to it at times.

Thinking back on it, almost every mega popular series beit anime or live action has had a controversial ending lately. They say endings are the hardest thing to pull off, but it's crazy how often even top tier franchises that pull in unimaginable size audiences fumble it, too.

@Shiokaze1409 I don't think there's ever been a more Nihei moment than introducing a bunch of characters who seem important in Biomega and would fit the enemy general role and then half of them kill each other one chapter later for vague reasons. Just drawing that shit with no plan at all.

@_Nuclear_Rose People call 08th MS Team realistic and grounded while Shiro is dodging point blank 100mm Zaku machine gun fire on foot after it's already out of the barrel. The first thing he does in the show is shrug off like thirty bullets to the cockpit in a Ball. Plot armor a mile thick.

@ultimate_lewman A lot of people ask "why don't they make movies/shows like insert thing here anymore" and the answer is usually "because it stacks no paper in japan". So it's nice to hear when an overseas market saves it in some way. The movie is really cool too, even if the writing is weak.

@junglewarsaw It's really cool seeing how they try to tackle the idea of making the game more visually exciting at a glance without adding meters or canned cinematic supers. I hope it works out for them. Boy that new guy has the most unremarkable design imaginable. Truly the spirit of VF.

@CypressDahlia Idol culture is what you get when a bunch of suits realise that deliberately cultivating and enabling toxic, obsessive fans who feel a sense of entitlement and control over the product (who must be an idealised corporate product, not a person) is extremely profitable. I hate it.

It's like the one scene where being extremely parasocial is not just the default mode but encouraged. In every other music scene that's largely frowned upon

The reason it's so hard to have productive conversations about music in idol culture specifically is because idol culture is designed to be a cult of personality. An idol themselves is the product and music, while a major part, is only part of it.

@JJunkWarrior No it is not. It’s one of the most dated action games ever. Ninja gaiden came out at the same time and it’s miles better than dmc1 as a character action. Dmc3 and God of war 1 was when the character action genre began soaring

@Cvit_ I think that remaking DMC1 is a bad idea both because it'd miss the point and it's pointless to do instead of just making 6. However, it wouldn't erase 1 and I dislike how remakes like RE2-4 are only ever discussed through the lens of "replacing" the originals.

I dread the day we get a dmc 1 remake. A game so purposefully designed the way it is that if you change any individual aspect of it the rest no longer work. Thus needing to change everything. And at that point is it even DMC 1 anymore?

@CanipaShow It's reheated grifter discourse, because this is the exact same thing that happened to Dustborn, which also had a small government arts grant, which gets spun into ooh scary woke government by outrage farmers. They'll probably do this again for some random game in a few months.

Can't get over people yelling about how Mixtape is "government funded" as a pejorative, as if the Australian government does fuck all for its games industry. We've had decades of our development studios close. All that's left are small indie teams with small state arts grants.

@CheeseGX_ It's crazy how faithful the script is for the most part, it's just an interesting case of changing the tone more than the actual content.

Anyone who claims Oshii's GITS isn't also true to Shirow's manga is only looking at the manga at the most superficial of levels and also likely hasn't read beyond 1 chapter

@_ODDEEO_ I know Innocence isn't that popular compared to the first movie but Batou is super goofy in 2, most of his dialogue with Togusa is buddy cop banter even when it's philosophical navel gazing.. He's basically an 80s action movie hero when the action scenes start.
