@JakOSpades @Mr_Mat_fr @epelgrino @ATE_CHT A single-engine aircraft like F-35 with larger inertia ingesting explosion gases or debris at low-altitude after a gun kill of a Shaheed is not advisable I’d argue. Better integrate F-35 with external APKWS rocket pods using on-board EOTS to provide sufficient separation. (3/3)

Aside from the fact the 🇬🇧 has not procured any GPU-9/A 25 mm gun pods for the F-35B, what are the chances that the Typhoons have similar FC limitations than the Rafales when it comes to close-range gun engagements on low-and-slow targets like Shaheds ? x.com/DefenceHQ/stat…

The Rafale's FCU has also be modified rapidly by Dassault to allow for close-range gun kills on Shahed type targets. Perhaps explains why have seen so many MICA engagements so far. x.com/Harry_Boone/st…

@JakOSpades @Mr_Mat_fr Agreed fuselage, electronics and (off-the shelf) diesel combustion engine can be handled well by automotive manufacturer on adapted assembly lines. The ofc need sufficient (state) orders to justify assigned human and capital ressources and realise the unit price advantage.

@StephanVelines @Mr_Mat_fr Absolutely, that is going to be the biggest bottleneck / challenge. But my point is that by designing the weapon to fit existing production lines and workforce expertise,rather than the other way round, you are going to reduce some friction and cost.

I agree, getting GM or Ford to produced complex munitions is going to be tricky, and that's before you get into the challenges of warhead production and installation. I think 🇫🇷's approach is more pragmatic: design a low-tech munition to plug into existing auto-production lines.

I am not really sure what Ford or other automakers could realistically bring to the table tbh The manufacturing model for most modern munitions is the antithesis of the manufacturing model for automobiles.

@stromgade @cameron19460429 I’m hoping the architecture is modular enough to enable: • rapid evolution (e.g. guidance in jamming prone environments, final-stage targeting) • hardware variations (trading fuel and warhead size depending on targets, sub-/cluster munitions) • decoy/jamming variants.

I think this is actually a much-needed step in the right direction. American automakers are great at scaling production and some of the core competencies overlap especially with basic UAV's and lightly armored vehicles but even with more advanced systems and wiring/ integration

Alternative angle on the outage over US not supplying ammo to Ukraine: it has been agreed europe would help Ukraine pay for US munitions, but it's going slow. Only thing slower has been supply of european alternative to PATRIOT, Aster. Which is, however... (1)

@Gabriel64869839 All BM interception capabilities are « up to a point » compared with other effectors, BM will always remain mighty challenging to intercept. As US experience in the gulf was has shown. It is, as I understand one of the first SAMP NG units is indeed going to 🇺🇦. Fingers crossed.

@Gabriel64869839 When they were moved close to the front line to ambush Russian frontline aviation, US but also other donating countries became very nervous. Ukraine had to pull them further back and did not repeat aviation ambush tactics for which PAC-2 missiles were indeed predestined.

@Gabriel64869839 Kinetically Aster missile is perfectly capable of BM interception, eventhough the Arabel radar and the older ARH seekers might have had problems in the past (partly remedied by software and user experience) very similar to issues encountered by Patriot crews (recently in Gulf).

@Gabriel64869839 Only 🇫🇷 and 🇮🇹 are providing SAMP and Aster, there was never any European participation beyond that. (Rest of) Europe is happy financing US weapons that are now heavily delayed or otherwise politically geo-blocked or restricted in usage, which you downplay as «slow».
