Today we lost a historic leader in the global human rights community whom I was privileged to call a friend & mentor. The Rev. Jesse Jackson believed firmly in fully inclusive equality that he viewed as a rainbow, was one of the earliest supporters of LGBT rights. Godspeed Jesse!

47 years ago, I was devastated by the loss of the love & connection of an uncle who personally provided me with a compass to my authenticity. Then & today, I am joined by millions across the globe who also felt & continue to feel the loss of a trailblazer who changed the world!

.@StuartMilk told me he was on board the USNS Harvey Milk - to be renamed for Oscar Peterson - for three days and "no one expressed [to me] anything but pride in the fact" they served on the ship. "My uncle's legacy will live well past the 40 year life" of the Milk, he said.

Uncle Harvey proclaimed in his July 4th 1978 speeches,(before his brutal assassination) “All People are created equal. No matter how hard you try, you can never erase those words. No matter how hard you try, you cannot chip those words off the base of the Statue of Liberty. #hope

I was with my mom @NancyGBrinker when she spoke at the naming of the USNS Harvey Milk — a Navy veteran, patriot, and symbol of hope. I watched with pride as she stood with @StuartMilk to honor a legacy that has always transcended politics. Stripping his name is a slap in the face — cruel, unnecessary, and wrong. We’re fools to think a stronger military can’t also be a diverse one.

I was honored to speak at the naming of the USNS Harvey Milk — a Navy veteran, a patriot, and a symbol of courage and hope. Stripping his name from this ship isn’t just petty — it’s an insult to our history and to all who’ve fought for equality. We cannot erase what Harvey stood for. @StuartMilk

I am deeply troubled by Hungary’s assault on fundamental freedoms with its ban on Pride events and expanded surveillance targeting the LGBTQ community. Having traveled to Hungary with Stuart Milk -- who accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom on behalf of his uncle, Harvey Milk, at the same 2009 ceremony where I was honored -- together, we saw firsthand the courage of those fighting for equality in the face of oppression. As both an Ambassador and private citizen, I have long supported democratic values and human rights in Hungary. I know this law is a betrayal of the freedoms Hungarians aspire to uphold. We must stand in unwavering solidarity with those fighting for the dignity of all.

We must as a global community stand strong & fight back! An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere! @HMilkFoundation for over a decade has worked on the ground with LGBTQ community against autocrats like Viktor Orbán Hope is never silent - we must not be silent now!!

Please remember Uncle Harvey who gave his life 46 years ago today, so we could all live our lives with authenticity, unmasked & proud. I know he would love you thinking of him today. He thought of all of us when he wrote those prophetic words. "let the bullets that rip through
