This past weekend, San Bernardino County hosted the 2026 California Region Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) Recertification in Apple Valley at the Horseman Center. With over 20 teams from across the state, this large-scale event brought together rescue personnel serving as subjects, command staff, evaluators, and team members. Each of the 15 participating teams was tasked with locating subjects, assessing their condition and environment, and building technical rope rescue systems to safely and efficiently extract them. Teams were evaluated on technical skills, safety, medical care, communication, lowering techniques, and more. The MRA is a national volunteer organization that sets high standards for mountain rescue teams. To remain accredited, teams must recertify every five years in Search and Tracking, Technical Rock, and Snow and Ice disciplines. California MRA teams respond not only within their own jurisdictions, but also provide mutual aid across the state when called upon.
