@TittyTweeter000 Start as, say, a murder mystery or a sea voyage, then start with the scares. I humbly recommend “The Derelict” or “Hotel Hell” as good starts. They’re part of the Petersens Abominations book on DrivethruRPG, Lulu, or Chaosium’s site.

Call of Cthulhu is Earth with an extra, mysterious realm tacked on. But since it’s a horror theme, the players don’t have to know anything ABOUT the extra realm. They can learn as they go. Compare to a non-horror Earth-based universe like Percy Jackson or Harry Potter. The extra realm is wide and deep and once you’re plunged in you need to know about its rules & denizens. Part of the joy in both franchises is the hero’s wonder as he learns. But in Lovecraft your character can and probably should remain ignorant of that wider realm. Those humans who DO delve deeply become monsters themselves. This makes Call of Cthulhu perfect for new players. Or veteran players who don’t want to read volumes of background? Did this fact draw you towards Call of Cthulhu? (Or fend you off?)

@SandyofCthulhu just let them go into it completely blind, thus making the horror impact even greater? And how would that work regarding creating characters and the prep with players. Do you think it could be done? Keep in mind, I know nothing about the CoC rpg, but I definitely want to try it.
