When my wife gave birth, she needed two units of blood. The hospital charged me 100k. I requested to see the doctor because why will I pay for blood when donations come for free. Good worry. I understand you, so let me explain. Blood can't just be removed from A to B. Why? It may cost more harm than good. You have to screen the Blood for transmittable diseases such as HIV 1 and 2, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Syphilis, Malaria, then conservation and storage. Prior to transfusion, Blood crossmatch to make sure the donors Blood isn't reacting with the recipient. So yes, Blood is donated for free, but it has to be screened before transfusion.
