@WhitneyHemsath Some betas will complete the manuscript within a week or two, but quite often it can take longer, and if the beta ghosts then you might need to find others. (All of the estimates are for projects that are more than 80k words.)

@WhitneyHemsath Betas tend to take 1-3 months. Editing depends on the editor’s availability, but usually anywhere from 3-8 weeks per round. Cover design can take a couple weeks (again, depending on availability.) Formatting can also take a couple weeks.

Indies who hire editors/formatters/cover designers: How much time do you allot for all the edits, designs, and formatting? If I want to publish in March, when should I have it back from betas, edited, and given to my editor? Also, how much time do you give your betas?

In writing, pacing refers to how quickly you reveal and explore information—and to readers, how quickly the story FEELS like it’s moving. This means that pacing applies to ANY genre, whether it’s poetry, nonfiction academic work, or a high fantasy novel. (1 of 4)

@Write_Plan @joelbrigham It’s early days, but I feel like my WIP has too much ‘action’ happening in a short period of time. I’m sure that will be addressed once I review the first polished draft later in the summer. Thanks for this - helpful points. 👍

Smaller-scale elements that affect pacing might include paragraph length, number of beats, and number and intensity of character actions. Many sentence-level elements—their structure, length, and variety—also play an important role. (3 of 4)
