Day 468 of asking @gully_golden to cook up Pizza Gyoza (#TMNT2012) for one YouTube video and Yoylecake (#BFDI) for another; he's free to choose which food to cook first of the two I listed. Day 468 of asking GoldenGully to play Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Wrath of the Mutants.

@kangminlee The average weight of a Black woman in the United States is 187 pounds, or roughly 85 kilograms. It's already normalized, but it is not a good thing at all.

For the left, race swapping only goes one way because representation is treated as power correction. The old cultural center made whiteness look like universality itself. Recasting roles away from whiteness is framed as dereification: cracking the reified casing that made a historical power arrangement feel natural, neutral, and self-evident. In this framework, power controls more than laws, institutions, money, and access. Power controls what feels normal. Its highest form is invisibility. Once a power arrangement becomes background, people experience it as reality. That is reification. A historical arrangement hardens into apparent nature. Something produced by repetition, exclusion, prestige, and institutional habit starts to feel like the way things simply are. The main example here is race and whiteness, though the same directional logic is often applied across sex, sexuality, religion, disability, immigration status, and class. The old center becomes the false universal. The white, male, straight, Christian, European, able-bodied, respectable citizen appears as the implied neutral person. The default human. The unmarked subject. He can stand for “everyone” without appearing as a category. Everyone else becomes marked. Black people, women, immigrants, disabled people, queer people, non-Christians, and other groups appear as particular identities, while the old center appears as “just people.” That is the power relationship. The center monopolizes the ability to look universal. Hegemony makes this feel natural. It turns the false universal into common sense. People do not need to consciously endorse the coding. They inherit a symbolic world where authority, beauty, competence, leadership, heroism, innocence, intelligence, and civilization have already been routed through the dominant image. Over time, repeated coding leaves residue. That residue is sedimented ideology. It is the cultural gunk. It coats roles, stories, genres, institutions, images, and expectations until the coding disappears into the thing itself. A king feels white.
A genius feels white.
A hero feels white.
A medieval fantasy world feels white.
A “normal family” feels white.
A figure of public authority feels white. The code becomes hard to see because it has settled into the background. It presents itself as realism, tradition, fidelity, neutrality, or “just how the story works.” This is why representation matters inside the left framework. Symbolic space is a real field of power. The group that controls the default image also controls much of the symbolic capital: legitimacy, prestige, authority, centrality, innocence, and the right to appear universal. So when a Black actor plays a role long coded as white, the move is framed as praxis. It cracks the sedimented coding around the role. It contests the false universal. It forces the viewer to see that the role only felt naturally white because hegemony had trained the audience to experience whiteness as neutral universality. That is dereification. The spell breaks. The role is pulled out of its inherited casing. The universal element inside the role, such as courage, royalty, intelligence, heroism, beauty, sacrifice, or moral authority, is separated from the old racial coding that had captured it. Then comes redistribution. The role’s symbolic capital moves from center to margin. Prestige and universality are reassigned. The marginalized figure occupies the place where universality had been monopolized. That is why the logic for the left is directional one way only. A movement from margin to center is framed as repair because it contests the old monopoly on universality. A movement from center to margin is framed as re-centering because it allows the dominant image to occupy even spaces created by exclusion. The two moves carry different meanings because they occur inside an unequal symbolic order.

Are any Greeks acting in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey at all? Or is cultural appropriation only offensive if it goes one way?

Korea used to build hanok villages for housing—beautiful traditional Korean architecture with courtyards, natural airflow, and space for family life. Now it builds high-rise apartments optimized for density and profit. At the same time: - record-low birth rates - highest suicide rate among OECD countries - rising isolation - disconnected communities Most treat this like a mere economic problem. But what if it’s also an architecture problem? Bringing back human-centered housing and architecture like hanoks won’t fix everything but it might be part of what could save Korea.
