What Is the Purpose of Our Existence? A Mystical Perspective That Challenges Modern Assumptions
In a world dominated by science, technology, and materialism, the question of existence often feels like a relic from an older time. Yet, even amidst our pursuit of knowledge and progress, one question lingers quietly: Why are we here?
This question isn’t confined to philosophers or theologians; it’s an invitation to step beyond the surface of life and explore the essence of reality itself. Not through dogma or ideology, but through direct inquiry: What is the nature of existence? And where do we, as human beings, fit within it?
The Unfolding of Reality
Existence is not random. Mystics across cultures and traditions have suggested that what we experience as life is the expression of an infinite, boundless Reality—an unfolding of potential into time, space, and form. This is not about a deity or supernatural force as traditionally understood but about the essence of Being itself. Everything we see, touch, and know is part of this unfolding.
You and I, as human beings, are not separate observers of this process. The human heart, uniquely, serves as a vessel capable of reflecting and witnessing this Reality. But there’s a problem: the heart is often clouded, veiled by distractions, desires, and attachments that obscure its ability to perceive clearly. This creates the illusion of separateness—the sense that we are isolated individuals in a fragmented world.
The Illusion of Separation
What drives much of modern life is this illusion. Mystics describe it as ghaflah—a state of forgetfulness or heedlessness. In this state, we see ourselves as separate entities navigating a world of objects and events. This perspective, while practical, conceals the deeper truth of interconnectedness.
The dissatisfaction many feel—whether subtle restlessness or profound existential angst—arises from this disconnect. Modern life offers countless distractions to fill the void, but they never address the root cause: the illusion of separateness itself.
A Mystical Perspective on Purpose
Mystical traditions, particularly Islamic Irfan, propose that the purpose of existence isn’t to escape suffering, accumulate wealth, or achieve temporary happiness. Instead, it is to awaken to the unity behind the illusion of duality. This awakening, described as kashf (unveiling), is not a belief or philosophy but an experiential reality.
In Irfan, the culmination of this process is shuhud—a state of direct witnessing where the seeker perceives reality as it truly is. At this point, the boundaries between self and other dissolve. What remains is not a void but a fullness—a recognition that everything we experience is an expression of the same infinite Source.
The Qur’an captures this insight succinctly: “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth” (24:35). This Light is not a physical phenomenon but the essence of existence itself, illuminating all that is.
Beyond Materialism
From this perspective, existence is not a problem to solve or a series of goals to accomplish. It’s an invitation to see clearly—to witness the interconnectedness of all things and recognize the eternal presence that underlies the fleeting forms of life.
The materialist worldview often dismisses such ideas as abstract or unprovable. But the mystic isn’t concerned with proving anything. The aim is not to argue or convince but to see and experience directly. The mystic suggests that reality is not what it seems and that our sense of self as isolated beings is, in fact, the root of much of our confusion and suffering.
A Thought to Consider
If life is more than a series of events and achievements, what might it be pointing toward? Mystics suggest that the answer isn’t “out there” but closer than we realize. Beneath the layers of identity, thought, and emotion lies a deeper essence—a connection to the infinite Reality that gives rise to all things.
