Kenya will spend Sh68.7 billion on external debt this month, mostly to China for SGR loans. Key payments include: —Sh2.6 billion to the Trade and Development Bank. —Sh2.4 billion to France —Sh55.8 billion to China for loans financing the Mombasa-Nairobi-Naivasha SGR. —Sh3.9 billion on the 2021 Eurobond.

Breaking News: The High Court has just delivered its judgment in the petition challenging the appointment of the Chairperson and Commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). In its decision, the Court dismissed the substantive petition seeking to invalidate the appointments. However, the Court also held that the Gazette Notice issued by the President to formalise the appointments was unlawful, as it had been published in violation of a valid and subsisting conservatory order issued by the Court. Consequently, the Gazette Notice has been quashed. In light of this development, the legal effect is that the appointments, while substantively upheld, remain incomplete until they are properly formalised in accordance with the law. The President is therefore required to issue a fresh Gazette Notice to regularise the appointments in compliance with the Court’s judgment. Once this is done, the path will be clear for the Chairperson and Commissioners to take the oath of office before the Chief Justice and formally assume their roles at the Commission.
