"The SEC's approval of Nasdaq's tokenized settlement framework is a meaningful step.
Tokenization in this framework is an optional transfer rail layered into existing DTCC infrastructure—not a separate settlement system.
The real unlock for tokenized markets is not as a configuration for a traditional securities trade. It is replacing the settlement and recording system to put blockchain at its core, rather than as an optional layer still reliant on traditional settlement.
That is a longer road. It is also the only one that changes the architecture."

The U.S. SEC approved Nasdaq’s rule change to allow certain securities to be cleared and settled in tokenized form under the DTC tokenization pilot. Eligible participants may opt for tokenized settlement via an order flag, with tokenized and traditional shares trading on the same order book with the same execution priority. The initial scope includes Russell 1000 constituents and select major index ETFs.
