@john_barzal @KennethLPearce Hebrew literature has certain markers that tell the reader if it is meant to be illustrative and metaphorical poetry. In English we have similar indicators. We also have indicators if the story is told as if it were historical but was meant to be taken metaphorically.

If your view about the Bible is compatible with Jesus' parables, or the Parable of the Trees in Judges 9:7–15, being works of fiction, it's compatible w/ Jonah being a work of fiction. This is not the hill to die on.

Jean Carroll, after being found liable of sexually abusing her last year, and ordered to pay her $83.3M. Also yesterday, former Trump adviser Peter Navarro was sentenced to prison for contempt of court. Navarro’s is just 1 of over 700 prison sentences that have come from efforts to help Trump overturn the 2020 election. Obama’s tan suit owned the news cycle for a week, but in a day or two we won’t be talking about a current presidential nominee’s sexual abuse convictions or prison time for attempting to overthrow democracy anymore because something even more outrageous will have happened. This is what I mean when I say we’re living through “unprecedented times.”
