@RexDouglass An institution that set out to teach people how to be scientists and was funded as such wouldn't have an issue; the issue is that universities follow a "learn by doing" model that produces either fake learning or fake doing.
His Alice and Bob example hinged on a fake toy problem!

@RexDouglass Yeah, the fact that he frames the problem as "this will gut our institutions" and not "how can we use these tools to achieve the intended result" underscores how farcical the institutions are. It's only a problem because they claim to make science but instead make scientists.

I think this gets directly at the real question - what is the point of science as an institution today? Arguably society at large wants it to be "making science" while the institution wants it to be "making scientists." And how well things are going can be tied to which you want.

@Wormsworth__ Hegel would agree with your professor. A holist, he believed there are no islands of reality. So if we are free, have rational self-knowledge, and are capable of integral self-expression, then we can supposedly reverse-engineer or reconstruct reality to explain these facts.

The lack of interest in sperm donation is a truly bizarre mistake from an evolutionary perspective. Genetic million dollar briefcases of cash sitting on the sidewalk, and almost no men pick them up because "it's weird" or "it might lead to an awkward conversation in 20 years".

@kendrictonn @SpencrGreenberg Agreed, the loose orb on the bottom right is suspicious. 2 we can discount because an AI would think that pineapple was "wrong", bottom left because of the fly (if prompted in manually, it would have been made more central to the composition). 1 I'm not sure on.

@SpencrGreenberg For what it's worth, and it's probably worth something, I do not recognize any of these pieces, and am most suspicious of 1 and 4, top left and bottom right, being AI. I guess it's a professional opinion, but I am not confident in it

They are aware every time they use AI to publish a journal with fake sources, it creates more time and effort for everyone to verify if the work is true (which is why I said nobody should read his work).

@zenahitz Synthetic (pidgin Kant) subjects require you to apply learned principles in succession, analytic subjects require you to generalize from whatever you do know. The former has a lot of failure points, the latter has none. Doesn't mean STEM education is bad.

If the thing we call intelligence is a measure of "problem solving speed" rather than "problem solving capability", we should expect it to largely wash out in the course of history at the macro-level, because familiarity with your own problems approximates higher intelligence.

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about intelligence is seeing it as some kind of unbounded scalar stat, like height. "Future AI will have 10,000 IQ", that sort of thing. Intelligence is a conversion ratio, with an optimality bound. Increasing intelligence is not so

Above the "studies shows" upper midwit in intelligence, but equally mind-diseased is another phenotype: the open-minded, hyper-rational guy who sees their inability to appreciate things that are non-quantifiable and belong to the spiritual as a sign of intellectual superiority.

-"Puzzle games" usually aren't actually very complex, in the sense of a lot of moving parts; rather, their parts fit together weirdly. Really complex puzzles (Fez, Animal Well) are basically designed as ARGs- so, wikislop. The Witness is the upper bound for non WS puzzles imo
