We remember the life of former First Lady of TN, Martha Sundquist. Her tireless commitment to improving communities across the state & her love of its natural beauty left a lasting legacy, including a state forest bearing her name. Our condolences go out to the Sundquist family.

Al Gore didn't win his home congressional district either in 2000. Bush improved upon Dole's margin but voters split their tickets with a 63 point gap between the House and Senate races. Rep. Bart Gordon had his best showing in a decade.

In the 2026 Japanese House of Representatives Election, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party secured supermajority, securing 316 seats alone. This historical landslide was based on FPTP system, where the LDP won 248 (and 2 LDP-affiliated Ind. candidates) seats out of 269.

AI SLOP: This problem will never go away, but the amount of AI “slop” from social media engagement farms continues to grow exponentially. Why do I care? When dramatic, fake forecasts like these don’t verify (and they almost never do), people start lumping legitimate meteorologists in with the nonsense. Eventually you hear: “They’re always wrong.” That loss of trust is dangerous — especially when a real warning finally does come. If people are told every week that a monster snowstorm or tornado outbreak is coming, they stop paying attention, they stop preparing, and they delay action when it actually matters False alarms numb people. Tornadoes and other high impact weather events don’t forgive complacency. The most disturbing posts are the ones that show AI generated severe weather outlooks, that are very similar to the real ones issued by NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center. Do, you know my charge to you this morning. Please THINK before you share!!!

Just a Quick Clarification... There's been a lot of confusion online about what storm recovery funding is. You may have heard we received Emergency Declaration funds. Emergency Declarations are for state and local governments so they can take immediate steps to protect the whole community. They are not for individuals. Right now, there are no FEMA funds available for individuals. If you need support, local nonprofits or 211 can help connect you with resources based on your situation.

This video illustrates the power outage evolution from peak out to four days into restoration. Around 400,000 customers remain out, with the hardest hit areas with ice in LA, MS, TN recovering slowest.

Getting a lot of comments about how this storm was a bust and that we have gotten no ice. That is because the bulk of the storm has yet to come. Not sure why we haven't seen ice storm warnings expanded, because people are letting there guard down. Do not let your guard down tonight.

I’m gonna be honest, I’m really worried about the ice threat in Nashville with the latest model guidance we just got. Especially with the lack of underground lines around here. I’m prepared for the worst, and I recommend everyone in middle Tennessee do the same. Feel like we might remember this one for a long time if this forecast verifies.

Over a decade ago, @FiveThirtyEight published a clever methodology for estimating someone's age based on their first name. I turned it into an interactive tool, the Name Age Calculator. Type in "Jennifer" and discover when that name peaked in 140+ years of Social Security data (spoiler: 1970s babies). It went semi-viral and got picked up by major outlets. I've kept it running all these years because people genuinely enjoy it. It's one of those simple projects that reminds me why I love building things: when data tells an interesting story, people want to engage with it. Try it out: name-age-calculator.randalolson.com Drop a comment with the most surprising name age you discover. I'm curious what you'll find. #DataScience #dataviz #DataAnalysis

Fun Story: Just now, for a project, I asked ChatGPT to generate a CSV mapping CT's 169 towns to its county. It then created a CSV with 160 towns, while claiming it had all 169. Of which 159/160 were correct. Still quite a time saver, but man the data quality control is GARBAGE.
