It's important, but not a deal breaker. Alignment with mission and passion are more critical in my opinion.

Internships are usually helpful, but perhaps volunteering. I volunteered at my state board of HE and made important connections. #divjchat

@CeciliaOrphan Exactly! You are also able to see broad patterns. It reinforces the notion of a shared community/space. We're in it together.

Shortly after I completed my comp exams, I interned at the Council of Graduate Schools and it completely changed my view of our HE world

I would try to intern during the summer with a higher ed org in or around the D.C. area.
