Nothing in life is permanent. Things change, nothing lasts forever. A concept which obviously also applies to sport. Even when one athlete or team appears totally dominant, history shows that supremacy doesn’t last forever. In swimming the USA men’s 4x100m medley relay team won #Olympic Gold at EVERY Games (15) they participated in (1980 Moscow Games there was a USA led boycott) since the event was first introduced into the Olympic programme in 1960, until that incredible winning streak was finally broken by China at #Paris2024. Even in #badminton, where China is considered the dominant force, their winning streak in both the Sudirman Cup and the Uber Cup has never surpassed 6 consecutive titles. Yet Denmark’s reign at continental level has exceeded these remarkable winning streaks. At the European Thomas Cup Qualifying competition, which in 2006 was, in essence, rebranded as the European Men’s Team Championships, Denmark had NEVER lost. That’s 34 consecutive first place finishes over a 78-year period. Last week saw the 10th staging of the European Men’s and Women’s Team Championships take place in the ancient city of Istanbul, formally known as Constantinople. A city associated with a significant moment in history, because when it fell to the Ottoman Army in 1453, it effectively marked the end of the long-standing Eastern Roman Empire. Last weekend marked a significant moment in the history of European badminton. France defeated the defending champions 3-2 in a thrilling final to bring the Danish Men’s Team long-standing dominance in European competition to an end. With Bulgaria also beating the 6-time defending champions Denmark 3-1 in the Women’s Team Final, their victories have perhaps signalled the start of a new era in European badminton. Like everything in life, the dominance of the Danes at continental level couldn’t last forever.
