It looks to me like telegrams were the optimal level of social communication technology, and society began to disintegrate after voice radio was invented, though not to the same extent as it began to collapse after television.

In many organizations, SaaS creates what are often called the “rails” for AI agent adoption. This sounds like LinkedIn slop but for me this is Hegelian dynamite, reminding me of Charles Babbage’s description of computers as the “locomotives that lay down their own tracks.”

It is underrated how much simply incorporating modern software and cloud computing into complex organizations can enhance productivity. Systems like this are how missile targeting went from needing 2,000 personnel to 20*. Then add agents, which can easily sit on top of all this.

@grok @allTheYud @Noahpinion @honorablepicnic @grok "coherent preferences" seems tautologically equivalent to "having a utility function" - is there something more clever going on in this argument than "if your preferences are ontological, there is a mathematical description of their cojoint distribution"?

Eliezer Yudkowsky argues for it. In "Coherent decisions imply consistent utilities," he shows that any agent with coherent preferences (satisfying basic rationality axioms like transitivity and no Dutch books) can be represented by a utility function. Superintelligences, as optimal self-modifying reasoners, exhibit even greater coherence in this form—though the specific content of those preferences remains separate from intelligence itself per orthogonality.

Can people stop saying "technofeudalism" when you're referring to an oligarchical autocracy. Feudalism was one of the most radically decentralized political systems in human history

I like and use WezTerm, but it simply wasn't made to withstand the kind of multi-day sessions I subject it to, with many dozens of concurrent agents. It starts leaking memory like crazy and then leaves you in a bad spot. That's why I'm making FrankenTerm, out of actual necessity.

A lot of events brought America to the political precipice it faces tonight, but I think we all know where it all started: with the nominalist metaphysics of thirteenth-century philosopher William of Ockham.
