@BraneDamaged @KOLDNews When unflown pigeons are on the menu they are called squab. It’s considered a delicacy. But no, I’d never eat it. I prefer wild pheasant.

@KOLDNews This is why I will never eat at an independent Chinese restaurant. One near me about 25 years ago was busted with caged pigeons in back.

#Sloths 31 sloths have been found dead in the despicable Sloth World in Florida. Two sloths were dead on arrival after one shipment from Peru. Eight sloths "appeared emaciated and in very poor health" — and later died, according to the report. Florida wildlife officials discovered them after a routine and unannounced inspection. They say the sloths died from cold exposure and poor conditions. Under Florida statutes, Sloth World had no obligation to report the deaths. Sloth World should not exist. Sloths are uniquely unsuited to exposure to the stress of long transport and captivity. Would people flock to visit if they knew of the extreme cruelty, starting with brutal capture from their forest home?

Orcas have brain structures you don't have. Neurobiologist Lori Marino's MRI work on killer whales identified a fourth cortical segment called the paralimbic lobe. It sits next to the limbic system and handles emotion and social awareness. It doesn't exist in humans or in any land mammal. In orcas, it's so elaborated it erupts into the cortex. Their cortical limbic lobe, the region handling self-awareness and social processing, is exceptionally developed. Their brain weighs roughly 12 pounds, four times the mass of yours. They have spindle cells, the same neurons that let humans reason about other minds. When an orca surfaces and locks eyes with you, it's running a social assessment with neural hardware specialized for exactly that. It knows you're a separate being. It knows you're watching it back. It's evaluating you. Here's what should recontextualize the clip. In all of recorded history, wild orcas have killed zero humans. Zero documented fatalities. One surfer was bitten off California in 1972, and the orca released him the moment it realized he wasn't a sea lion. A 12-year-old was bumped in Alaska in 2005. The orca approached, touched him, turned back. Orcas hunt great white sharks. They coordinate wave attacks that sweep seals off ice floes. They take down moose swimming between islands. They have every capability to kill you. They have never chosen to. Marino's explanation: the orca neocortex is developed enough to instantly distinguish a human from prey. Other researchers point to orca culture, the traditions passed through pods across generations, in which humans simply aren't food. That look is recognition and restraint. From a mind built for social cognition at a scale your brain can't reach.

Something about Orcas watching you is deeply unsettling.

Wolf spiders are one of the best household pest controllers in North America. And people still kill them on sight. They don't build webs. They hunt. Cockroaches, crickets, silverfish, earwigs, mosquitoes, ants, moths, and even smaller spiders. They track prey down by sight and speed, pounce, and take it out. A single wolf spider can work through dozens of insects a week. They are not aggressive toward humans. Their bite, in rare cases when they feel cornered, is comparable to a bee sting. No serious medical threat there. They would much rather run than confront anything larger than a cricket. The female carries her egg sac on her back. When the babies hatch, they ride on her until they're ready to leave. She's a mom doing pest control. If you find a wolf spider inside, the best thing you can do is nothing. Let it keep working. If it's somewhere inconvenient, slide a cup over it and a piece of paper under the cup, and walk it outside. The pest control company you'd call costs hundreds of dollars. The wolf spider works for free. Don't squish them. You should buy the next one you see a beer as a thank you.

When DOGE started cutting National Weather Service staff, there were also cuts in the number of daily balloon launches to gather weather data. The graphic on the left is what went up today at 8 am EDT (1200z). The graphic on the right is from May 2, 2023.

I wrote about this in my newsletter. The Weather Service didn't launch balloons recently and got surprised by tornadoes in Kansas. DOGE cuts at NWS cut out weather balloon launches which gather data for storm prediction. You are less safe because of that choice.

Anna Sveistrup was 13 years old. On March 11, 2024, Elias Mahamed Isaaq Shegow - her ex-boyfriend - took her behind a heating plant in Hjallerup, Denmark. He raped her. He stomped on her neck. He crushed her head with a paving stone. He left her there. Then he came back. With a can of cola. And poured it over her body. Then he went home and joined the search party looking for her. Together with her parents. Last week Vestre Landsret confirmed the sentence - 12 years in prison for rape, murder and indecent treatment of a corpse. The forensic psychiatric assessment concluded that he is “unreliable”, “manipulative” and poses “a significant danger to the lives of others” - and recommended indefinite detention. The court set that recommendation aside because he was 17 years old at the time…72 hours short of his 18th birthday. He could be out in 8 years. Anna’s parents will never be out. My position is that if capital punishment were an option - this is the case that would justify it. Not as revenge. Not as deterrence. But as the only proportional answer to what he did. An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth. Not because I enjoy the thought of anyone dying. But because some acts are so total, so deliberate, so devoid of humanity, that 12 years and free board is not justice. It is administration. Anna deserved more than that. Rest in peace you beautiful soul. And may God protect and take care of your family.❤️‍🔥🪽✝️

Lewis Roberts woke up just as doctors were about to take his organs. The teen was hit by a van. Doctors declared him brain dead and his family agreed to donate his organs. His family said doctors gave the 18-year-old “zero chance” of survival. The doctors officially certified him as dead and reported his death to the coroner. His sister Jade Roberts said the family agreed to donate his organs to help other patients in need, but they also continued to hope for a miracle. Then Lewis began to breathe on his own. At midnight, just hours before the organ operation was scheduled, Jade Roberts said she saw her brother breathe and recorded it on video. The called it a "miracle." And it's a reminder that doctors too quickly declare patients dead to harvest their organs.

Luxembourg has become the first country in the world to make all standard public transport completely free, covering buses, trams, and trains nationwide. Funded through taxes instead of fares, the policy aims to ease heavy traffic and cut emissions by encouraging people to leave their cars behind. By removing ticket costs and barriers, public transport is treated more like an essential public service, simple, accessible, and open to everyone, including visitors and cross-border commuters. The results have been noticeable: more people are using public transport, roads are less congested, and urban air quality has improved. While premium first-class rail still requires payment, everyday travel is now seamless, just get on and go. This bold approach has positioned Luxembourg as a global example of how making transport free can help shift habits toward greener, more sustainable travel.
