@MojangStatus Okay so things are in fact working again, 14 hours after you said they were. Sloppy guys. Just sloppy.

The Realms service is back up and running globally. It has been running healthy for more than the last hour. You should be able to see, manage, and play on your Realms again. Thank you again for patience as we worked through the issues. -DK

@MojangStatus Can you explain - perhaps in a video - to my 6 year old why he can’t play on realms? He has demanded I fix it. Or hire me and I’ll fix it.

We are still hard at work to improve the reliability of the Realms service. We are seeing the service recover for most players. Thank you again for your patience.

@dieworkwear Amenities in cities are significantly different than the exurbs. Is that 2.8k sqft home a quick train/bus ride to multiple major works class museums? My house cost just a bit more than that and has early 20th century deets: coved ceilings, oak floors, wainscoting, etc.

I can't believe the kind of real estate you can get if you move out of major cities. This 2.8k sq ft Carter Sparks home in Fair Oaks, CA just sold for $1.2M. Has a central atrium and 20 ft built-in couch. $1.2M in San Francisco would def not be this 🔗: blst.to/806yena

One-in-five teens use YouTube almost constantly. Hand a kid a screen too early and you might be setting them up for adult mental battles, detachment, even aggression. Particularly troubling, young children aged 2-5 with an excess of screen time (>an hour per day) is linked to lower percentile ranks in cognition, language, and social–emotional skills. I deeply value what tech brings to the table, but maintaining its balance without compromising mental well-being is something that, even as an adult, requires continual reinforcement and restraint.

Oh man, I also meant to ask... do people still *do* this? Run massive logging, indexing and searching clusters, I mean. How do you justify the labor and opportunity costs, in an era where logs are a commodity and hosted services are dirt cheap?
sontek@sontek

@mipsytipsy @ahidalgosre @timotheo I want a talk on how to go from unstructured shit show to beautiful structured logs. Our graylog + opensearch clusters are the largest systems we maintain (larger than the actual product) and most of the logs no one ever looks at

There’s a pathology on Twitter when people get dunked on for some hot take then start to issue more hot takes & lean into their status as persecuted truth tellers. It doesn’t lead anywhere good but it happens fairly regularly. I think the vulnerability is narcissism.

You inherit a math program that is 150,000 lines of C, with no tests, mostly written in the late 80s/early 90s that only works on 32-bit Windows and has a GUI. You want to add a great many features to both the frontend and backend. What will be your approach?

In SF and feeling inspired, so here is my plan to double the GDP of our country: A brutal, medieval military occupation of San Francisco. Under my economic growth plan, the city would make make Pyongyang seem like Disneyland. Here are the details:

If you say “mysql doesn’t scale” as a complete sentence I immediately know you’ve never worked on anything serious. For that matter, substitute mysql with any other tech. RDBMSes don’t scale JavaScript doesn’t scale PHP doesn’t scale Mongodb doesn’t scale Junior dev energy.

@e_considine @C_Kavanagh Totally. What I don’t get about the critics is… what material policy would have been different? The counterfactual world seems to include insane things like invading China?? It’s nonsensical. Lableak is the most boring conspiracy of all time.

@ryanobjc @C_Kavanagh It's more of a religious type argument. Like saying a preacher may be right in his theology but he doesn't really believe in God deep in his heart. A scientific paper is self contained. It's conclusions follow from the data and arguments it presents, that is all it can be.

The Guardian asked the ridiculous question why so many of the people on this list go to jail. 1) Because they committed crimes🤷🏿‍♂️ 2) Because the VCs that fund these criminals, enabling them to do things like make this list, do not have good judgement theguardian.com/business/2023/…

My students really want to understand adjoint functors, and I understand them enough to "feel them," but I don't understand them enough to teach other people how to "feel them." How can I explain adjoint functors to some undergrad and graduate students?

This is what happens if an entire site is scraped & plagiarized, all the old Stackoverflow answers are now condensed in an ever confabulating chatbot that doesn't have a clue what it's doing. Be prepared for very buggy software going forward.
