@SusanPotter I outright don't trust estimates, and they mostly come with a disclaimer of "hey, this may vary by a HUGE AMOUNT". As you already very well said, there's no actual explanation of how one would do this, not even with any reasonable confidence level.

@SusanPotter Yeah, and lots of hidden domain changes, e.g. the technology used to solve the problem may have undergone an update, making the solution fundamentally different, even invalid. I try to keep my """estimates""" to the smaller tasks, until I can decompose the larger ones.

@laurentgiroud @smdiehl I think that what you both say speaks some truth. Have you observed any traits that may push higher quality software to lead the equation for profits? Maybe concrete steps that I could apply to help? I've of late been inclined to produce 'tooling', so concrete steps are helpful

@smdiehl @shadowcomer What this means is that as long as software generates profit, its quality or lack thereof is often ignored.

@laurentgiroud @smdiehl Would this mean that good software doesn't produce profit? Maybe it doesn't produce as much profit, or as fast, as low profit software? This feels strange to me, because my instincts tell me that high quality software should produce higher profits. What would I be missing?

@smdiehl Software is terrible because the main value estimator we use for it is profit.

Finished the first version of the Haskell Cost Centre Stack viewer. (similar to call stack) It uses GHC-WPC to show the source code of the functions. Web UI is powerful and easily accessible! github.com/grin-compiler/… #grin_compiler #Haskell

If you needed some good news today: there is a textile factory near my old stomping grounds which donated a production run (~30k masks) for Gifu's schools. The kids sent back thank you letters. More on their blog in Japanese if you like: makimura.net/news

Today on TV, the Deputy Director of the federal paramilitary force in #PDX discussed the infamous van video. He described a textbook example of an unconstitutional arrest. But... he doesn’t seem to know it. That is a BIG PROBLEM. Let’s unpack this. It’s important. (thread)

@csdoctorsister Slack does not help me in any way to maintain any kind of 'organized' work. In fact, it makes it harder to work, because: 1. It hides knowledge in small bits of conversation that could literally be anywhere, mixed together. 2. It encourages shorter, less insightful responses.

It is not right to define anyone as enemies, but when they define their own, closest, group of people as enemies, don't think that it's "them": It's every single one of "us".

Governments have a changing concept of "enemy" that they push onto the public at any point in time. At times, it's other countries, at other times, it's something abstract. But some other times, it changes to its own country.

13 years ago, I emailed Dr. Fauci out of the blue to ask if I might interview him for my undergrad thesis. He invited me to his office, where he answered all my questions. When I sent him the thesis, HE READ THE WHOLE THING (see his overly effusive review below). Who does that?!

Taxpayers are paying NYPD $494 million this year to police transit. That money could instead pay rent for every single one of the 14,000 homeless families living in NYC for a full year at the median rent for NYC. And theyd still have $74 million leftover. We need to talk.

1. Facebook is lying about its fact-checking program and its approach to climate disinformation. This gets a bit into the weeds but its worth it because Facebook is trying to use the complexity to obscure its actions, which are indefensible. Let's review.
