Updated my CV today, and I can barely believe that I did all this in one single academic year…in addition to going to conferences, working on 4 co-authored research projects, teach 6 courses, 2 independent studies, and 2 honors enrichments…no wonder I’m so tired!

When I taught a First Amendment course on the Religion Clause, I was an outspoken hardcore Atheist. An Evangelical kid took my course, wrote a thesis on how Atheism should be considered to be a religion for the purposes of the establishment clause. I found the notion offensive and ridiculous. But the kid wrote a great paper. He booked the course. He met with me afterward, shocked. He said "I took this course because I wanted to piss you off. I knew I would graduate if I got a B in the course. I never expected a B+, much less to book the course" It isn't hard to set aside your own personal feelings when it comes to grading. It isn't the easiest thing in the world, but it is maybe a 3/10 for difficulty.

4 years after college graduation, I worked as a secretary in a university math department. A math Masters student wandered in one day and said, “have you ever thought about going to grad school? I bet you’d be good at it”
