I’ve heard/read talk about @DetroitRedWings trading Raymond or others to shake things up since this core can’t get them to the playoffs. Why not trade one of their young goalies? Cossa, Augustine & Postava are all 24yo or younger. Gylander as well, also 24. Cant play them all.

One big reason it’s unlikely a McGonigle extension does NOT get done this year…Tigers would break the $244M competitive balance tax threshold which is based on AAV. They currently sit around $242M depending on the source.

What may get lost in the well-deserved hype of this catch…Angels won this game, 1-0.

Love that AJ keeps mixing it up to find the right lineup but this version puts a lot of pressure on young McGonigle. Let’s see how he responds. Side note…Dingler may soon find himself in the top third of the lineup since he’s the only RH guy hitting right now.

Defensively…pretty much what I expected with Famber toeing the rubber. Although, I thought they’d get Vierling a start in CF. Would rather have Riley guaranteed a 1st inning at bat over McKinstry who I’d mix down to 5-7 but it’s just game 2.

@confusion_reign He had reverse splits in 21 & 23 although 25 was the most significant. Imo…Tonight, Vierling should play CF tonight so he doesn’t have too many days off in a row. McKinstry plaza 2B tonight with Torres DHing & Colt sitting.

@7JayP I dont think they’re going to make a point of putting him in the lineup vs LHP. Vierling is platoon-neutral- I don’t think they’ll sit Vierling vs a LHP to play McKinstry. More that they won’t necessarily automatically PH for McKinstry vs LHP this year. But I could be wrong.

AJ might be in a tough spot creating his lineup these next 2 days. SD has 2 more RH starters going & then a day off before going to AZ. Can’t sit McGonigle. The need to get Vierling & McKinstry a start or they’d go at least 5 days without playing. Probably Jake too.

@7JayP Well, McKinstry mashed LHP last year but before that he was never a reverse splits guy. He did a great job of staying in counts until he got a fastball and crushing it. I’m not sure they’ll try to get him in vs LHP this year though. It’ll be interesting to see how much he plays

@MSmithDetroit If all goes well…one or more of Lee, Anderson, Jung, Peck, or even Keith get dealt at the trade deadline for the last piece of a World Series team.

My former FO brain can't help but wonder about the Tigers 2027 configuration even after just one game in 2026: If McGonigle is truly a plus defender at 3B (and he looks the part so far), the best 2027 club may have him there and the best of Lee/Anderson/Jung at 2B instead of McGonigle. This creates a cascade with Keith. Options for him are: trade, move to 1B, move to RF. If they want to keep him, then one of Torkelson or Carpenter may get traded. It may be Carpenter who's actually pushed out - with Clark coming, this club looks very different with Meadows in CF and Clark in RF. Carpenter's injury history and role as a platoon bat may have him on the outside looking in.

@7JayP It’ll be interesting to see who sits vs LHP. You figure Jones starts for Kerry, and Javy plays too. Do they play this alignment and platoon Keith? I know they want him to be an everyday guy. Meadows? Hard to see McGonigle platooning.

@confusion_reign Agreed. Could also see McKinstry playing 2B & DHing Torres. I think I heard Cody Staverhagen say he expects McGonigle to play SS on Saturday. So maybe Keith sits today & plays 3B Saturday.

@7JayP I was really surprised they started Javy yesterday, I assume he’ll play SS when Framber pitches. Maybe they sit Keith or Kerry today and get Vierling in, in RF?
