When matters of faith come up in the Canadian public square, it is usually in the context of civil liberties or social/cultural issues (e.g. the debates concerning Bill C-9). But there are other reasons why faith is relevant to the public square. For many, belief in God is a source of personal courage and strength when times are tough. There is a confidence that can come from faith in who will ultimately judge your life. It is a confidence that can liberate us from the day-to-day judgment of other people that all of us must contend with. To be easily discouraged or influenced by the judgment of others can make being a public figure torturous. This is true for artists, activists, athletes and, yes, politicians. So many public figures are conditioned to operate out of fear of the judgment of others. Fear of the media, fear of social media, fear of political opponents, fear "what *they* will say." We need people to enter the public square without being controlled by fear, because being controlled by fear means perception matters more than truth and what is applauded matters more than what is good. It's not easy to do right for your community if you operate from a position of fear. I hope everybody who steps into the public square can find whatever helps you guard against fear, whether it's faith or other convictions. I hope to see more people living their lives with purpose and authenticity. And I hope for a cultural environment where living with purpose and authenticity are rewarded over all of the fake stuff, because there is just so much fake stuff and it's getting us nowhere in solving big problems.
