This, from the Province’s press release, represents a QUINTUPLING of passenger volume. To an airport accessed off a cul-de-sac at the foot of Bathurst. Adjacent are parks, a school, a community centre, the Martin Goodman Trail, surrounded by tens of thousands of residents.

@JRBalvinn @zanderyow I'm not sure where you're going here, because Union Station and BB are an eight minute drive apart, so nobody's saving much time on that one?

@zanderyow Pearson is jam packed. No one looks forward to the lines there. Not everyone wants to take transit either to the airport. After a long flight many just want to take a uber home and not everyone lives next to union station

The Harry Potter economy seems to have basically no private sector? Everyone either works for the Ministry or something probably funded by the Ministry (healthcare) or is some kind of small business owner. Education is almost nonexistent. There’s some entertainment jobs ig

@tradered86 @patapackala @maxtmcc Probably, but citizens aren't directly interfacing with Muggle food - they're unfamiliar with Muggle money. Now the economist in me is thinking about trade and currency exchange - if, say, wholesalers are spending Muggle money on food, where do they get those pounds?

@facetedcarapace I can make 3 burgers for the price of one in a restaurant. A place near me is $19.50. With tip it's like $23 or $24 to eat a burger

@SleeplessSW @Newpers77150010 @MuseZack Caladan was ceded to Fenring (iirc) when the Atreides moved to Arrakis - nobody there had any claim. And in any case, Paul knew a universe-shattering Fremen war of annihilation was going to happen either way.

A hugely underrated aspect of the Dune universe's appeal is how Frank Herbert built a world where people zip around the galaxy in spaceships but then fight each other with swords and knives. It makes everything 50 percent cooler than a world of ray guns and robots.

@MuseZack @SleeplessSW Paul’s use of them skirted right on the edge of acceptable. Their use is meant to be restricted to thinking machines. Not other humans. The fact he doesn’t directly use them on humans and only uses them on a wall in order to attack humans.

@eogfelton @its_hipolita Arguably (and it's been a while) you need enough water to start poisoning the sandtrout , which will give you more access to their captured water, rinse, repeat. Arrakis has a massive water reserve, but not an accessible one.

@CroakerBC @its_hipolita But my point is polar caps and sand trout are all part of the existing planetary system. You need extraplanetary water to tip the balance on Arrakis.

I think something that's not getting discussed about Dune is how heartbreaking Arrakis is. The Fremen stockpile water for the terraforming project but they will never be allowed to complete it: water kills the sandworm, which makes the spice which makes space travel possible.

@eogfelton @its_hipolita There's also the polar caps, and a lot of the water is captured by sand trout - presumably storing it as the Fremen do makes the caps shrink a bit and the trout less happy.

@its_hipolita Stockpiling water was a nice indicator of the Fremen’s patience and long term view but it didn’t work for me in sci-fi terms. How are you gonna add more water to a closed system? You’re just reducing the amount of free water elsewhere, right?

@donnelly_b Well I’ve lived here all my life for 55+ years and I remember it as the best city clean safe and beautiful. Tell me it’s that now…between the open drug use, massive crime spree, massive population growth, woke ideology policies, constant radical propaganda parades, homelessness

@retronymph @RobertSecundus I agree! But people will, with the existence of prequels, wonder where to start on the reading order, so "where do I start" is a perfectly fine question, to which the answer is probably still "Start with Dune."

@JonCrowellOrg @mattyglesias I knew a couple of farmers, long ago; they routinely worked 18 hour days, and made very close to nothing after breaking even, and were perpetually exhausted. I don't know when you'd have time or energy to do remote SWE work. Maybe as a hobby/toy.

@mattyglesias I think subsistence farming with a remote software engineering income could be a good way to make it work.

@EricDLombardi My feeling is let the market decide. If consumers don’t like it they can take their business elsewhere.

Algorithmic pricing almost certainly goes against the consumer interest and the perception of fairness among many Canadians. However, is banning it the right thing to do? I’m not certain. Regulating it may be harder than people think, too. Curious what my followers think?
David Coletto 🇨🇦@DavidColetto

Half of Canadians say they’ve seen prices online change in ways that made them think an algorithm was behind it. Flights. Hotels. Ride shares. Retail. People may not know the term “algorithmic pricing,” but many believe they’ve experienced it. Here’s what Canadians think about it. abacusdata.ca/canadians-are-…

After the most insane reading spree of my life, I have officially finally finished reading the original X-Wing series! There’s legitimately so many times where this series could’ve ended, yet even when it continued, it still was nothing short of exceptional. Michael A. Stackpole and Aaron Alliston have easily become two of my favorite Star Wars writers ever. These final two books honestly work even better when you view them as an epilogue of sorts for that original run. I highly recommend giving this series a read and encourage anyone to believe the hype. Genuinely peak Star Wars, billions must read!

The X-Wing books from the 90’s seriously had no right to go that hard, but I’m so glad that they did. Just finished the second book earlier today and I’m obsessed. Highly recommend giving them a read!

@CroakerBC @RobertSecundus Reading by release order is generally better than reading by chronological order, the story was written in that order for a reason(doesn't really apply here because anything beyond the 6th book is fanfiction but whatever)
