@RichardHanania Intersex people exist, so it’s objectively true that there are more than two sexes. It’s also objectively true that the vast majority of humans are born either xx or xy. The professor seems to be using the first truth to muddle our understanding of the second.

Amazing interview with the head of the American Anthropological Association: "So the idea that there are two sexes is just factually incorrect, and to force biological anthropologists to teach that is the equivalent of turning an astronomy department into an astrology department. So I don’t know why we’re debating that. You may not like it. I don’t know, maybe you want to kill babies that aren’t just XX presenting XX or XY presenting XY"

@RichardHanania She’s saying intersex people exist. That’s not a controversial statement. She’s conflating it with trans people, which may turn out to be correct. Either way I don’t see what you’re objecting to. Intersex people DO exist.

@HumBehEvoSoc The need for humans to cooperate to compete seems like it would drive the need to design them for intelligence.

Why are humans so intelligent? A new article explores the evolution of human intelligence and expands upon Richard Alexander’s idea that humans had to “cooperate to compete”. hbes.com/why-are-humans…

@Steve_Sailer Throwing is obviously more relevant to hunters than kicking, but perhaps the chasing down & tackling of opponents in other football codes (American football, rugby & Australian football) replicates some of the close-contact killing of smaller prey by our forebears.

A lot of sports are good training for hunter-gatherer skills: e.g., baseball is like throwing rocks at squirrels and swinging a club in war (but...swinging a club at a thrown rock isn't very practical). But what H-G skills does kicking a soccer ball refine? Kicking in fighting?

@Steve_Sailer @the_fem_tm I think dancing is it. Soccer is intuitive and playful -- everyone understands the appeal of kicking a ball around, because it is kind of like skipping or dancing, which is fun!

@the_fem_tm Straight European men tend to be better dancers than straight white American men. I wouldn't be surprised if soccer helps you get better at dancing, which our ancestors no doubt did to show off to the opposite sex.

@Steve_Sailer Unless a football hooligan culture emerges in the US, I just don't see us becoming a strong contender in soccer. If no one else cares whether you win a soccer game, then it is hard to care yourself.

Americans who say on Twitter that All We Have To Do to Win the World Cup Is ... don't realize how monomaniacal the soccer powers are about soccer. Consider the length of the soccer season: The World Cup Final is July 19. The English Premier League's season starts August 21.

Me: How long will this project take. Claude: About 12-18 months. Me: But you're an AI Claude: Ah yes if you leverage AI Coding then the estimate would be 6-9 months. Me: But you're an AI Claude: Even with AI, there are many aspect of coding that take time. AI can only do much to accelerate coding but it is not a magic tool. Now that we have a realistic estimate, would you like to get started? Me: Yes *3 hours later* Claude: Ok I'm done.

Just bought a Tesla Y Performance, and other than a pickup truck for hauling or a truly fast track car as a toy, I'm not sure why you'd own anything else. Everything else I drive feels like regressing a decade. I barely even touch the wheel anymore, and just punch in an address and have the car take me there. At some point, I assume we'll dispense with the wheel.
DHH@dhh

I've been a Tesla convert for years. Model X, Model S Plaid, Cyberbeast. But the Model Y we just got still blew me away! It feels so tight, so well built, so right. Unbelievably good car and good value. It sending an Aston Martin DBX 707 and Taycan Turbo S out of the fleet!

@lulumeservey I have to disagree on this. Normal rules don’t apply to national teams, fans root team first, player second. A guy from their club’s nemesis can score for the national team and they’ll lose their minds but won’t care at all if he scores in league play.

People don’t root for institutions, they root for people Even more than that, they root for person - singular If you look at the excitement around Norway in the World Cup, it’s really excitement around Haaland: the Viking, the freak of nature, the happy giant, the son, the meme Haaland is acting as a gateway drug for Norway as a country and soccer as an sport When it comes to hearts and minds, numbers work in reverse. The destiny of 1 player stirs more emotion than a team of 26 or a nation of 5 million

@TheStalwart Yes, if the US completely dedicated itself to the game, it is still questionable if it could compete against a Top 5 powerhouse. The US is 2 levels behind. Spain vs France should be the championship game. Two best teams with England-Argentina-Belgium behind them.

There have been a lot of exciting games in this World Cup. Plenty of close competitors by score. But it’s pretty noticeable having two strong teams, both playing near the top of their game, going up against each other. Just a different level of play.

@wesyang The guy behind this youtube channel got deported 16 years ago (his parents brought him over illegally when he was a kid), and I think he is actually much much better off as a result -- he built a really successful life in Colombia youtube.com/watch?v=4xH13w…

Reminder that being in a country without legal authorization was and is always sufficient grounds to be deported. You don't have to be a convicted child rapist to be deported and being pardoned for your child rape conviction (after serving zero jail time) does not protect you from deportation.
