The head writer and showrunner of “She-Hulk” was Jessica Gao. She was best known for being the credited writer on the “Pickle Rick” episode of “Rick and Morty.” During the production of that episode, “Rick and Morty” showrunner Dan Harmon cast Susan Sarandon as the family’s therapist, a character Gao had named Dr. Wong in the script. Gao crashed out over the casting of a white actor for this part. In 2018 this was a major transgression and as an act of contrition, Harmon did a podcast with Gao called “Whiting Wongs,” which is 40 hours of him apologizing and learning about racism. The writer credit on the Pickle Rick episode and this podcast raised Gao’s profile enough for her to land the showrunner gig on Marvel’s Disney+ “She-Hulk” show, but the production was extremely troubled. In addition to not staffing lawyers or legal-drama writers on the show who could deliver on the “Ally McBeal in the MCU” pitch, the “She-Hulk” show required — as described by Gao in interviews — an extraordinary level of direct personal involvement and micromanagement from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. Gao described her relationship with Feige as supportive and collaborative, but she also describes him routinely intervening to reshape the show in the wake of catastrophic test audiences responses. In the finale episode, She-Hulk breaks the fourth wall of her show, climbs through the Disney+ UI and confronts a robot named K.E.V.I.N. that has been controlling her life. Feige allowed this, but Gao wanted to put a baseball cap on the robot like the one Feige wears, and that was a bridge too far for him. According to an interview Gao gave The Hollywood Reporter, she threatened to resign if the robot could not wear the hat, and Feige immediately accepted her resignation. A visual designer managed to mediate the dispute by incorporating a “hat-like element” into the robot’s design. The show was cancelled after the first season, the cast has been released, none of its events have been referenced in any other Marvel productions and “She-Hulk” star Tatiana Maslany is not in “Avengers: Doomsday.” Jessica Gao has no IMDB credits since “She-Hulk” was cancelled in 2022.

The funniest story was how the creators originally conceived of She-Hulk as a case of the week type lawyer show but then they got to the writer's room and they all said they don't know how to do that as if it was lost knowledge like the Roman aqueducts

When we say machine capabilities are "jagged" it is worth remembering that human capabilities are like this too; as an example, we struggle to multiply six digit numbers, but we can recognize faces and read emotions with incredible skill and nuance

@SometimesSoftly The ai makes me laugh a lot. The parts that are meant to be im14andthisisdeep fall a little flat for me, but it’s ok. I accept it as very Reddit and enjoy it anyway

@mauddweeb I find it fun but not actually funny. And since I read it on a Kindle I can see the "often-highlighted" lines, and it's always something that's supposed to be so funny or so badass-epic, and it's always underwhelming.

@mhartl @Jayseki the (d) possibility in my quote tweets that he was using it as a pick-up gambit for his future wife is also plausible, but yeah I bet its (a)

@Jayseki @mauddweeb That’s exactly what they did. Which suggests 3 main possibilities regarding the John von Neumann anecdote: (a) JvN had such a system; (b) JvN thought he could beat a negative EV game; (c) some details of the anecdote are inaccurate. I submit that P(b) ≈ 0, so it’s (a) or (c).

@PolyesterMather @mauddweeb The difference is that deism was a religious belief, whereas simulation theory is based in our knowledge of complete systems

Guy in 1895: Stop sayings cars “run.” Only living animals with legs can “run.” You’re just falling for the Big Motorcar hype. Plus a car can only go 20 miles on a tank of petrol. A horse can go 40 in a day—on oats and corn! This is just a bubble.

I have spent over 10,000 hours of my life writing code. Now that a machine can do it 20x faster at a fraction of the price, I will probably never write substantial code again. I do not feel a modicum of sadness. I'm excited that I can do more, faster. I'm happy that the entire world will benefit in untold ways from this massive increase in productivity. How people react to a miraculous technology says a lot about their personality. Many people want to find a niche where they can perform a skill on repeat, and feel threatened if a machine enroaches. Others remain dynamic. They see the big picture, integrate, and adapt. This type has a very bright future.

Do any of these figures actively advocate for trans women to be included in the WNBA, or is this just gender land acknowledgement - i.e. it's fine to do nothing if you say the right things frequently enough.
Jackson Thompson@JackThompsonFOX

Natalie Nakase references her ethnicity in her defense of trans athletes. She is a third-generation Japanese-American. “Sports is about belonging... I’m big on that just because I have been criticized for my height, for my ethnicity."

>> abandon crude tribalism sure! but you first
2Loopy@quantop__

@aryehazan A necessary condition to achieve the next civilisational step is to abandon crude tribalism (eg racial, ethnic). This is only possible by continental/global scale effort. Western countries dedicated 1950s-2000s to this goal but it's being undone and we are basically reversing it.

“If you won’t suck my dick to make me happy will you suck my dick to save my life?”
Ixabert@LordIxabert

I apologise for the distasteful subject, yet it presents a serious problem in moral philosophy, & one that admit of no easy answer for those who judge everything by the category of the deed rather than the virtue & intention of the individual performing it. Suppose you & your best friend inhabit an unusually barbarous country. Wrongly convicted of stealing a spoon, both of you have your arms amputated & are condemned to spend the next twenty years together in a prison cell. Your friend is then bitten on the testicles by an exceedingly rare pider whose self-replicating venom attaches itself to his spermatozoa. By a fortunate coincidence, you happen to a medical toxicologist, and are therefore perfectly aware that the only antidote in such cases consists of the repeated administration of the urine obtained from an individual who has previously ingested semen contaminated by the active venom. The regimen admits of no interruption; it must be administered faithfully thrice daily, without omission, for ten consecutive years, at the conclusion of which the patient is permanently cured. Missing even a single day's treatment, however, results in the most excruciating death ever recorded in the history of medicine. No other physicians are available. No pharmacies. No women. Your friend, having no hands, is unable to administer the treatment himself. The only means of saving his life is for you to perform fellatio on him thrice daily, swallow the infected semen, urinate into a cup, & have him drink it throughout each day for the next decade. The question is entirely serious. Have you committed a homosexual act? Have you acted immorally? Or would the moral course be to refuse to save your best friend, & insead allow him to die in the most excruciating possilbe way? More generally, is the moral character of an act determined principally by its outward form, or by the virtue of the performer, and the intention with which it is performed?
