🇬🇭🇪🇸 A Ghanaian woman living in Spain has expressed her frustration over the high taxes deducted from her salary. According to her, what has added to her frustration is being required to do “La Renta”, the annual tax declaration process in which residents report their income to the Spanish tax authorities. She claims that despite already having taxes deducted from her earnings, La Renta” has asked her to pay even more. The woman further alleged that when she complained to the authorities that the taxes were too high, she was told that if she could not comply, she should return to her home country. According to her, they also remarked that if her country were better, she would not have moved to Spain in the first place.

If you were an economist, which you clearly are not. You would realise that what he is saying is fundamentally true and a law of economics. A strong cedi makes imports more cheaper. However, that actually doesn’t matter - because once you have imported cheaper raw materials and cheaper capital (that is machines) to add value locally, you must then export your goods or services. In which case, you sell the exports in dollars, and in that context the exports in dollars are not affected by the cheaper imports. This is because, it will be the dollar equivalent plus a sales markup. What will make the difference between the total cost of production and sales mark up, is the cost of the local value added, and in that context a stronger cedi makes the local cost of production more expensive. That is, you pay more for local factor inputs because of the stronger cedi. Similarly, the Marshall-Lerner condition also shows that a weaker cedi boosts exports and there is ample evidence to show that it holds in Ghana. The issue under NPP, was not that the cedi was weak, but that the cedi was not stable. If your currency is weak but stable you can expect to make the gains from being export driven — that’s why China suppresses its currency.

For production, a stronger cedi is a disadvantage. The appreciation of the cedi from 14 to 10 was not a good thing. It has affected our prices for export. - Mike Oquaye Jnr, Former NPP Parliamentary Candidate, Dome Kwabenya #TheKeyPoints #TV3GH

There is a point a national team reaches where it just knows it is elite. Confidence is high and belief that they will always win. Opponents know it too. That is Morocco right now.
