@GrammarTable Another book you might enjoy is the one that claims that grammar is different in the UK than in the US, e.g., “He insisted that I went” means one thing in UK and something else in US!

@anglopremier Never mind. I just saw this: "Dependent" is the dominant form in American English for both the noun and adjective, while in British English, "dependant" is more common for the noun.

I know the grammar checker in Word is unreliable, but I was surprised to see this flagged. Note to non-native English speakers: "a ewe" is correct, despite what Word might want to tell you. #English #grammar

@anglopremier Are you thinking of South African English (shame! or shampies in Afrikaans)? A sinvergüenza is a shameless person.

"shame" seems to be the go-to translation of "honte" (and of "verguenza" in Spanish). But "a shame" is more akin to "dommage" ("lástima" in Spanish). For "honte", use disgrace(ful)/shameful/scandalous/appalling. Don't use "a shame".
