New art project: the concept is to carve an image into wood in a semi-abstract form that allows the viewer to both recognize and personalize the image. The image is carved as an array of precisely cut dimples in a piece of pale wood pre-coated with black paint. 1/7

I voted for Joe Biden but this weekend I think all Americans need to rise above partisanship and counter the larger menace that is Philly sports fans.

Antivaxers have this unfounded idea that COVID-19 vaccines are leading to people "dying suddenly". But in a study of individuals with heart failure, the highest death rate was in the unvaccinated group. Explain🤣🤣🤣 onlinejcf.com/article/S1071-…

No systematic data but if you have a long bout of studying or research to do I suggest: Glenn Gould; Bach's Goldberg Variations [Glenn Gould, 1981 record] (BWV 988) I learned this one from the Mighty Oliver Sacks, M.D. & it’s never failed. youtu.be/p4yAB37wG5s

Something I've noticed about many academics over the years is that if they're into something--running, chess, violin, painting, etc--they can't stand not being really, really good at it. They consider themselves terrible at something if they're not nearly world class.

To commemorate my dear colleague David Allis, I would like to share a story about how Dave helped me shape my research program when I was struggling to figure out how to run a lab as a new PI at the Rockefeller University. 1/
Hironori Funabiki@HironoriFunabi1

I'm speechless... Dave has been offering huge mental, material and personnel supports to me while I was developing my career here. I was one of many who were drawn to the nucleosome world by Dave's enthusiasms and warmness. It is a devastating loss.

* Higher ed doesn’t teach imagination or risk taking * Academia is less attractive as a career * Most of the easy problems have been solved * Hard problems require bigger teams & longer runways * Govt. grants are risk averse, increasingly applied, and have stagnant budgets

@JamesAngstman @WillRagatz Yes exactly. The stat thinks Bob Tonyan is the best separator while AJ Brown is one of the worst separators; the opposite is true -- defenses don't care about Tonyan but double up AJB

Adam Thielen is still a valuable player and locker room presence in many ways, but he's struggled to create separation this season, ranking 97th out of 121 pass-catchers in that regard (per NGS). This was 3rd and 3 on the game's opening possession. Thielen's '23 cap hit is $20M.

@NickOlsonNFL @WillRagatz Is that stat defender-dependent? TEs probably have an easier time separating from LBs than WRs do from CBs. I wanna know how well any given receiver would separate from a generic defender, not the defenders they happened to face.

@WillRagatz Not sure I agree Thielen struggles to separate; imho he gets open on film but just has seen more aggressive press man coverage. Don't think the NGS stat is a good barometer of getting open; e.g. it has 8 of the top 10 separators as TEs and Osborn as a better separator than JJ

Covid (@UCSF) Chronicles, Day 1006 (!) There’s an awful lot of Covid confusion & misinformation out there, particularly around these three topics: masks, vaccines, and home tests. Let’s look at them in today's thread. (1/24)

Writing a good grant proposal involves both creative ('night science') and executive ('day science') aspects that are important to distinguish. Here's a 🧵on my strategy for deciding what to propose and the process of actually putting the grant together.

One thing is pretty clear to me in seeing the reaction to this Hunter Henry play from last night. PEOPLE SEE WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE. so many people claiming this ball never hit the ground. Also claiming Henry never lost control of the ball. We may not like the rule but please!
