Anne Frank became a symbol of the Holocaust because her diary gave millions of people a personal window into what happened to over six million murdered Jews and countless other victims of Nazi persecution. Saying “why should I care?” about Anne Frank is ultimately saying you do not care about the human reality behind that history either.

To put to bed the obsession that Anne Frank's diary is fake because of a ballpoint pen, here's every page of her diary with the ballpoint marks highlighted. It's 5 pages out of 933, and the marks themselves are tiny. There's a scribble under a word Anne had already crossed out, a couple of scratches between lines, and a small curl in one margin. None of them change a single word she wrote. What deniers actually mean (but don't realize) when they talk about ballpoint is two little slips of paper that a German handwriting expert left tucked in with the diary in 1959 while she was studying it. Those slips are in the expert's handwriting, in German, and the Critical Edition of the diary prints photos of them right there in the book. The weird thing about this denier obsession with Anne Frank is that it's purely out of revisionist spite. There's nothing in her diary that proves the Holocaust or the gas chambers at Auschwitz. She never saw a camp. By going all in on this vicious, bad faith attack on a fourteen year old girl in hiding, they're going mask off on how bad faith they are about the Holocaust in general.
