@RusGarbageHuman £1 in 2008 would be £1.65 today, even using the government's crooked inflation figures. Fuel isn't particularly expensive in real terms, growth has been flatlining and the currency is trash.

⛽️Diesel close to hitting £2 a litre (~$10/gallon) at motorway stations right now. Petrol is right behind. I passed multiple services at £1.98. Remember the national outrage when it first hit £1 in 2008? This is DOUBLE. And that’s only the visible part. 🪔Heating oil is through the roof for 1.5 million UK households. 🔥Gas & LPG have spiked 20p+ across rural areas, impacting non gas main communities. Travelling is becoming unsustainably expensive at this rate. Reminder that 60% of your fuel cost is tax and government charges. The country that started this war and the chaos in fuel markets is the same one calling to flood Europe with mass 3rd-world migration too. Is this a deliberate plan to break 🇬🇧Britain and 🇪🇺Europe?

In Thailand fuel is being rationed Australia is fucked Europe is ~$11 a gallon Meanwhile in Florida its $3.9 or £0.77 a liter. Americans simply are not feeling the real effects of this war, most you get is a grumble about price whilst the rest of the world dies.

@2hT4you @Real_SinaptiX @StealthQE4 The US market is incredibly fragmented due to refinery and pipeline constraints. There can be an ocean of oil in Texas, but they still import refined product on tankers in the west coast. Different grades of crude are imported because refineries are limited in what they accept.

@Real_SinaptiX @StealthQE4 Nope, California imports refined products from overseas. The US is by no means an autarky, it's a complex supply chain and there isn't enough in land pipeline capacity.

@PolemicTMM That's just another way of saying "you're all going to be poorer" and people don't have the bargaining power to demand higher wages to offset higher prices.

@ClimateWarrior7 You just need to play your "right side of history" card and they will instantly let you off. It's obviously vital to have an unaccountable authoritarian police state that monitors every utterance for Wrong Think but they do occasionally make mistakes and drag in the Good People.

I for one never anticipated that, when we implemented harsh crackdowns on speech, the police would end up coming for US!

@John_Stepek @RollingHedge The price of bottled water is determined by private companies and traded globally. The fact you're suffering a drought is totally unrelated to us blowing up the dam 10 miles away and filling the pipes with concrete. Besides, rebuilding the dam will take a long time, why bother.

What I love about celebs is they have really no filter. They never start nitpicking and asking themselves "Is this true?" or "Are the sources of this reliable?" They just get straight in there denouncing or promoting or whatever.

If you want to understand why Japan’s auto industry is so far behind on EV adoption: The average charger in Japan is still 50 kW CHAdeMO and billed by the minute 💀

Three spool engines were discussed and sketched by my father and his scientist friend, both from the National Gas Turbine Estabisment, at our dining room table in the 1950s. I eaves dropped as a fascinated teenager. Both worked with (not for) RR and later both heavily involved with the Olympus and Concorde.

The Rolls-Royce RB211 was a perfect athlete. A 70s technological marvel, this is the jet that almost broke Rolls-Royce, driving it to near bankruptcy. A broad menu of technological firsts were attempted in this program, including carbon-fibre fan blades (which Rolls-Royce subsequently backed away from). The RB211's design legacy was the fabulously successful Trent family of engines that has made RR the aerospace colossus it is today. Not bad for a half-century bet! But the biggest hidden design legacy of RB211's ambition is the addition of a 3rd spool inside the engine: A shaft inside a shaft inside a shaft, each powered by, and powering, a different part of the turbofan. The design & manufacturing difficulties of this architecture, still unique to Rolls-Royce, were legion, but it paid off: Not only does a third shaft allow you to run the big fan from its own dedicated low-speed, low-pressure turbine stages, but it also adds impressive modularity to the engine design. This allowed RR to scale-up and optimize the Trent family for new airliners with impressive agility, which in turn let them successfully slug it out with their far larger American competitor, General Electric. Modularity matters.

@stevepennick @LoftusSteve You're assuming gas can be globally traded in a frictionless fashion, in reality it's stranded in regional markets and LNG is marginal supply. Imagine finding a new local milk supply without the ability to chill and bottle it for global export.

@LampLighterBot @LoftusSteve The global price for milk affects prices in the UK far more than the volume of milk produced domestically. The same is true of gas and oil.

@stevepennick @LoftusSteve It doesn't matter how it's traded, the molecules are still stranded in Northern Europe and you get local pricing given enough supply. It's like deliberately rationing milk production then saying the price is set globally by private farmers when retail prices inflate.

@LoftusSteve The UK buys LNG on the global spot market. Between 15-20%. The UK government doesn't own our North Sea gas. It's traded by private companies in the open market to the highest bidder. Both Norway and Britain tax our energy at a far higher rate than the US.

Looking for Growth
The UK could be facing fuel shortages in weeks. So, what's been going on with our own energy? Hinkley Point C was initially meant to cost £18 billion. Now, it's set to cost £48 billion. Why have we made it this expensive?
