@HelenHet20 The vote against going ahead with Rosebank and Jackdaw, in the circumstances, might have our allies asking why they should help us if we refuse to help ourselves (albeit, similar critiques could apply to certain of them too).

This is another way of saying that the UK hasn't taken fossil fuel energy security seriously for about four decades so please don't ask us to bear the consequences. ft.com/content/52541a…

Plus, EVs are not just cars. They are the endpoint of a hydrocarbon-dependent energy system. Mining, batteries and charging require lots of them. Greenies are about to find out, as we saw in 2023 when inflation started to feed through post-Ukraine, that this shock is bigger and therefore a disaster for their dreams.

@7Kiwi @RobertJenrick @northseaweather Agreed. Awfully petty of Reform. Sure there can be a long rationalisation of why they voted against, but those who are sane about energy policy need to put party politics to one side here.

@RobertJenrick @northseaweather But you didn't vote for this week's Tory motion to restart drilling in the North Sea. The energy crisis is much bigger than petty party politics.

Rachel Reeves is missing in action. Around the world Governments are slashing VAT off fuel to give motorists relief. Sweden, Spain, Portugal to name a few. But our Chancellor is doing nothing - and is raking in a windfall in extra taxes. Reform have your back. We are calling for an emergency 3 month cut in VAT to give motorists some much needed relief. I wont stop until the Chancellor finally acts.

To produce one's own gas, where ever possible, makes not only economic sense, but also environmental sense. To liquefy, transport and re-gasify natural gas cost about 20% of the energy. It is a significant waste for both the economy and the environment. If EU had lifted its fracking ban after the start of Russia Ukraine war (when the problem of EU energy policy already became so obvious), it would be in a much more robust position to deal with the ongoing energy shock. EU's refusal to produce its own gas for climate virtue signalling is a huge blunder, which has yet to be corrected.

@MDC12345678 A strong sense of conviction: ‘fools and fanatics are so sure of themselves and wiser people so full of doubt’. Ed definitely ticks the first two.

Labour MP texts in after PLP meeting to praise Ed Miliband’s “strong performance” “Ed made a very clear point that the public are more ambitious than many in Westminster think. The room were with him on not dashing for gas in north sea. He was very clear that it would do nothing to bills”

@baylissbaghdad x3 times the capacity for less product…proper Soviet economics…which makes sense, arguably.

And we have barely started. Total installed capacity is projected to be triple what it is today by 2050 under current plans. But the actual dispatchable, reliable capacity will be less than what it was in the 1990s - even with EVs, home heating and industry relying on the grid.
Edward Stringer@edwardstrngr65

It is well worth following @Dieter_Helm for insight into total, systemic costs. In this case, owing to intermittency, we install over twice the capacity we need because we cannot guarantee more than a fraction of it. That capacity, including the extended grid, costs.

@3wayboy @MDC12345678 @siennamarla That report has been widely rubbished. If you want a decent Oxford view, try Dieter Helm (their Professor of Economic Policy, previously Professor of Energy Policy). Or, head over to Cambridge and read Helen Thompson.

@MDC12345678 The “best thing *we* can do is…” - we can’t do this at all, we’re not party to the conflict and have little to no influence over those who are. Even this bit - before the “unfair” price rises / “working people” rubbish - is total guff. Amateur hour (or decade+).

@ajsrugby Curry and Itoje both to have the Summer off. Maybe Genge and George as well. Obviously risky to take inexperience down to SA, but then experience didn’t help too much vs Scot/Ire/Ita anyway…

@MDC12345678 Totally correct. Demand is down and yet prices are up for electricity (whilst we apparently aim to move to electrify everything - transport; AI etc). Absolute cluster*#*$.

Just as interwar disarmament was popular, cross-party and presented as common sense, people will soon regret the past 25 years of dismantling firm power and neglecting our domestic natural resources. We demolished coal, failed to prioritise new nuclear, vandalised the North Sea and banned fracking. In its place, we installed 45 GW of renewables and degraded the productivity of the grid. Between 2009 and 2024, total generating capacity rose by 20.7%, yet output fell by 24.2%. The system now has more capacity but produces less electricity. We are more exposed to geopolitical shocks. This is an epic failure of grand strategy by our governing class.
